Hi there,

Can you get fromage frais without added sugar? I want to give some to my DD, but everything seems to have sugar in it i.e. Petit Filous.

I think the Sainsbury's own brand ones don't have added sugar.

breatheslowly · 06/05/2011 16:22

While they don't have sugar, they are sweetened with with "deionised fruit juices" which are a source of sugars. I don't think there is much between using modified fruit juices as a source of sugar and just sugar. Both still rot teeth if not taken with care.

I'm just using greek yogurt (can always add a bit of fruit if you like), is there a reason it has to be fromage frais?

VeronicaCake · 06/05/2011 19:07

You can get plain unflavoured fromage frais either in nice cheap big pots or petit filous do plain teeny tubs. And you could always add some fruit to this yourself, that would almost certainly be better than buying ones sweetened with concentrated fruit juices. But my DD is happy with her yoghurt and fromage frais plain.

Thanks ladies! All good to know. I just asked as my HV said I should introduce fromage frais. Don't particularly want to give her sugar as she's only 8 months (with two beautiful teeth that we want to keep). She's very happy with plain yoghurt so I shall continue with that.

Rachels childrens yoghurts are sweetened with fruit juice. I used to get them from sainsburys but then they stopped selling them. Maybe in your area they still have them. I used to be like you but as she gets older and is able to cope with more sugar in her diet I have relaxed a bit. Agree on the natural yoghurt suggestion and just add fruit purée. We need more options on the shelves. It's a nightmare.

sleeplessinderbyshire · 06/05/2011 20:48

plum baby framage frais have no sugar in but slightly bizarre flavours

TittyBojangles · 06/05/2011 20:52

Anyone else know why fromage frais? It's a genuine question - I've always been a bit confused about the difference between yoghurt and fromage frais... is there some reason ff is better?

RitaMorgan · 06/05/2011 20:56

I don't think it's any better, just sweet/creamy so it appeals to kids.

TittyBojangles · 06/05/2011 21:20

Ah ok, will stick with the greek yoghurt then while DS is happy with that then I think... I'm sure he'll inherit my sweet tooth anyway without me encouraging it ;)

onepieceofcremeegg · 06/05/2011 21:27

*supergreenuk" do you really and truly think " we need more options on the shelves"?

Are you in the UK? Where I live (Midlands) all of the big supermarkets have a whole aisle full of yogurts, fromage frais, rices etc. It's overwhelming. There is a section for "luxury yogurts" "every day yogurts" "children's yogurts" and various other desserts. My dd1 has been known to cry because she is overwhelmed and doesn't want to make the wrong choice! Grin

Some are full of sugar, some completely plain, some with sweets in, some with chocolate hoops in, every fruit imaginable...need I go on?

I for one would like to see fewer, rather than more options tbh.

btw mashed banana goes a long way I find when mixed with yogurt or fromage frais.

supergreenuk · 06/05/2011 21:56

Healthier options yes. Kids yoghurts are so full of sugar and is so hard to find alternatives
