Starting BLW, some questions...

DD is a week away from 6m and has had some purees and baby cereal over the past couple of weeks. It's always been the plan to do BLW and I think she's probably ready to give it a go now. Is a week before 6 months ok?

We are pretty short of space and have been using a Bumbo as a booster for her to sit at the table with us- will a Bumbo tray be suitable for BLW or do we need something with better containment? If not, what about this

We don't usually eat meat (DH does when out) so most meals will be vegetarian. We use Quorn a lot but I've seen conflicting advice on whether babies can have it. Does anyone know for sure?

What do folks do if they have carpet? Our table is in the living room- kitchen is tiny). I thought about a pack of those foam playroom tiles from Tesco. Or do I just not bother, clean as best I can, then get the carpet cleaned once we're over the worst of it?

And lastly, (is that even a word? Confused) I'd like to buy her an apron with sleeves, but one that is soft rather than scratchy plastic (PFB, I know). Any recommendations? I should just make one but am not that handy.

Sorry that was long- any advice would be great. I've a feeling I'm overthinking it somewhat. :o

A week before 6mo is fine if your DD is ready - if she's grabbing food, let her go for it.

Sit her in whatever - on a mat on the floor, in a bumbo, a high chair - we use a chicco quickseat for DD.

I've not heard anything to say Quorn can't be used but I may be wrong.

Get a cheap dust sheet and stick it under where DD is sitting, then you can shake it off and wipe it.

I got some FAB soft bibs with sleeves from poundland - they're the only ones that haven't fallen apart or got stained and mouldy, I tried more expensive ones and they were crap

I heartily recommend this site for advice and food ideas Grin

Great, will add Poundland to my list for today.

BTW, love the name- had seen it on posts before and thought it was v. pretty, like fliss- 'felicity' and paps- 'boobies'. Needless to say, I felt like a prize turkey when I twigged! :o

ds2 started at 5 1/2months - he grabbed an adult sized rice cake out my hand and scoffed the whole thing.

we have a booster chair with a back that reclines a bit and a tray so we can push him away from the table a bit when he's getting really messy and stroppy. I had a bumbo tray for ds1 and he couldn't keep anything on it, it was far too small. our booster seat tray has bit of a raised edge so everything doesn't go straight off the side!
i've got a couple of fabric armed bibs. one from mothercare and one from waitrose. i think i saw one in tesco or sainsburys the other day. i've also read some people cut up old babygrows and put them on backwards as a coverall bib.
not entirely related but my waters broke over our foam square mats and leaked inbetween all the joins so if a baby spilt runny stuff it would get in all the joins. i got a big sheet of plastic from the fabric section at dunelm mill - they cut to size and had some really nice fun print waterproof table cloths you could use.

Oh, thanks. I have some of that waterproof stuff in a cupboard somewhere, though I can't remember what it was meant for.

I've ordered the p&t Me Too seat as it was on offer at tesco? Will check for bibs there but plan to do breakfast in pjs and dinner in vest so will just be for lunches.

We're loving it so far and she's swallowing quite a lot. We've done toast, pitta, cucumber, baby corn and mango.

Well, it sounds like she was ready for it! :)

Definitely need large plastic floor covering and for her not to be sitting too close to the walls etc - it's not for the faint hearted!!

Have fun :)

Bibs with sleeves from ikea are good. Tesco/Asda/matalan all do it too.

We put a shower curtain on the floor under the high chair & wash over night when needed

Quorn has egg in it doesn't, just in case you're wanting to introduce potential allergens one at a time. That's the only reason I can think of.

I'm a vegan so she doesn't have that, but make sure you offer orange or similar if you give her lentils

jandmmum · 08/05/2011 05:40

A cheap shower curtain is a great floor covering. Easily wiped and can go in the wash.
Young babies and children shouldn't' have Quorn because its filling without being fatty enough. Hence its free in slimming world.

I second the shower curtain - we got one for a couple of quid in argos and it's still going strong now DD is 16 months - easy to wipe down after every meal and when it's minging I just chuck it in the washer.

I got some aprons with sleeves from tesco - they have fabric arms and plastic coated front bit, which have been fine and we're still using them for messy meals now, but as Flisspaps said they do go mouldy and get horribly stained
