Would you feed a 6 month old rhubarb crumble?

Have just made a rhubarb crumble, dd1 and ds both say it's horrid, I think it's delicious but now have a mountain of the stuff and no one to eat it.

Would it be OK to let 6.5 month old Dd2 have a bit? It has a hell of a lot of sugar in it so I was thinking not, would you?

I love rhubarb crumble - send it to me and I'll have it!

But no, probably wouldn't give it to your Dd2 - unless you could just separate out the rhubarb or something..

ginmakesitallok · 04/05/2011 17:35

I would - not too much of the crumble though because of the sugar I suppose?

WishIWasRimaHorton · 04/05/2011 17:36

yes, i would. but not sure a 6.5 month old would make that much of an impact on the mountain left though?

Even the rhubarb has rather a lot if sugar added Blush.

Ah well, guess it's a big bowl and large spoon for me tonight!

Grin, WishIWasRimaHorton, she'd probably eat all of 2 teaspoons worth, but at least then I'd feel I hadn't eaten it ALL myself.

I would, yeah.

hmmSleep · 04/05/2011 17:45

I'm trying to be a bit more open minded about what I offer Dd2 as my older 2 are rubbish non crumble eating eaters and feel I must have gone wrong somewhere when weaning them. However I agree, no rhubarb crumble for her.

Yes. Next!

suwoo · 04/05/2011 19:41

You've got more yes's than no's. Just give it her.

More for you if the dc don't like it! I can't see the problem with that :)

I stewed rhoobarb with sweet dessert pears (no extra sugar), it was lovely and scoffed by all including 7m old at the time.
Shopping list for rhoobarb? Stick a plant in the garden it'll grow like a triffid!

chocolatchaud · 04/05/2011 20:51

Dh was actually very excited when he got home, so not sure they'll be any left for baby anyway!

hwhite6, I plan to plant some rhubarb but heard you can't eat it the first year, do you know if that's true?

beela · 04/05/2011 21:23

yes, i did last week and it went down very well :)

jumpingjojo · 04/05/2011 21:47

ooh, like the pears idea. I roasted some rhubarb last week and that way it needs slightly less sugar. Haven't offered it to my 6 mth old as didn't think she'd go for the stringy effect. I froze it and am waiting for good moment to make the yummy looking rhubarb and custard cake on the good food website !

No, if you plant it you shouldn't use it the first year. Just had to look at the crop last year but all worth it as have lovely harvest this year :)

hwhite6 · 05/05/2011 11:36

I didn't know you shouldn't eat it the first year, but 11yrs in I get ~20kg from a single crown. I never dug it out to let the frost at it either it covered it up. It thrived on neglect! If it starts to flower though, you put break off the flower stem or that area of the crown will die off completely (happened last year...)
