Breakfast ideas

Hi,

My 6 month old has been a little constipated and I now realise that the banana and weetabix she had for breakfast yesterday won't have helped! She was awake last night straining and crying Sad

We have made sure she has had lots of water and fruit today and it seems to have flushed her out a bit....nice! Anyway what can I give her for breakfast that won't make her constipated again? Is all the baby cereal ok? I still have some fruity muesli (cow and gate) and oats and apple (Heinz) in the cupboard? Although we are giving her lots of finger foods she doesn't want to hold them! We hold them ip to her lips and she will happily eat them and has stopped gagging quite as much too. Although everything goes in her mouth, food just won't!!

Thanks

just drop the banana. Weetbix by itself should be fine made up with milk (whole, formula or breast)

porridge?

NoTeaForMe · 02/05/2011 21:31

Oh....is it likely to just be the banana? She loves banana!! Shame! So weetabix and the muesli and oaty cereal will all be ok?

Thanks

Does banana really make them constipated? My DD (new to weaning) loves it too.

PenguinArmy · 03/05/2011 02:32

Just make sure there is other fruit in the day. Oranges after dinner and she's getting plenty of water. It was a while before we worked out to get more water into DD but this was when we noticed a massive improvement. She has a banana everyday (if not more).

Also loving the fact there is currently a weetabix advert on the side Hmm

Oh can they have oranges now? I don't know why but I hadn't really thought about giving her an orange!! Seems silly now. Do you just peel and give a segment to suck on?

Thanks

runny oat porridge with mushy fruit such as papaya, soft pears, or a mixture of stewed apples and prunes. this might sound strange but stewed pumpkin is sweet and nutritious too.

greek yogurt with same fruit as above.

you can make pancakes , they are soft to chew on and melt in the mouth. smear with apple sauce or any of the baby jar fruit compotes (apricot, peach, etc...). Make a small batch and freeze, defrost as you go.

a piece of wholemeal toast with no sugar added fruit spread.

If you have only just introduced solids a little straining, crying and soreness is sadly very common. It usually stops quite quickly. In the meantime keep doing sensible things like giving her soft fruit (ripe pears are great) and oats (because oats contain soluble fibre) and make sure she is still getting plenty of fluid (milk or water).

My top tip is to make porridge with regular oats (no need for baby porridge but obviously use up what you've got) and then toss a few frozen berries into your baby's portion to cool it down. It makes it really tasty too.

we used to give her segments with the peel on. She would then suck all the orange off. Same for squashes actually with her dinner.
