8 month old rubbish with finger foods

DS2 is 8 and a bit months old. DS1 was always a bit rubbish at independent eating, so I was determined to introduce finger foods and self-feeding a bit earlier this time round. I didn't want to do the full-on BLW thing, but I've been trying to give DS2 finger foods alongside purees at most meals.

Trouble is, he's rubbish with them! Most things he won't even contemplate - any sorts of fruit and veg, in chunks or fingers, he won't pick up - he usually won't even touch them, just looks at them and cries. He loves toast, and anything similar (breadsticks etc), but the trouble is, he almost invariably gags on them and then throws up half the puree he's eaten. It doesn't seem to make much difference whether I give him tiny chunks to put in whole, or fingers for him to chew.

Is this unusual? Should I keep perservering, or just hold off on finger foods for a bit? He's a big, hungry baby who eats his purees and milk very enthusiastically, so I don't think appetite is the problem!

Thanks!

I would not worry at all, 8 months is still tiny, let him play and have fun as long as he eats enough however, if you make mealtimes a stress because you think he's rubbish you will make a rod for your own back, he's learning, give him a break!

Gagging is normal - it's how he gets used to lumps. I'd suggest giving him finger foods at different times to purees. You should also think about making his solids less lumpy too?

Thanks. I hadn't really thought of giving finger foods at separate times - that's a good idea.
