Can a baby be ready for 'traditional' weaning but NOT BLW?

As thread title really...
DS is 5.5 months, showing no interest in food yet. We did BLW with DD (now 2.3) from about 5 months and it was great, but I know that DS is a long way away from her developmentally- doesn't pick things up and put them in his mouth, can't really sit up very well even with support. But I don't want to not feed him if he's ready for purees?
I guess my question is really: what do you do if DC isn't ready for weaning at 6 months? Any experiences of starting weaning later?

I would just start later, what's the hurry? Also, they develop so fast at this age. Even though she may seem far from it now, two weeks later she might be ready, just watch.

That's what I want to do TBH- just looking for support from the wise world of MN to counter-balance the nagging voices of MIL and HV!

Purees can go down much earlier due to over riding the toungu thrust (I think!)

I Would wait.

The signs of being ready to wean whether using purees or blw are the same. So loss of tongue thrust, sitting, able to pick up and put things in their mouth. If he can't do that, he's not ready for purees either.

The guidelines say 'around 26 weeks' and 'about 6 months'. Some will be later, some earlier and some bang on. DD was later. We just waited a few weeks.
