Oh dear, this is so precious but... tuna in brine?

I want to make croquettes for lunch for me a DS 6m, but I only have tuna in brine. I was told not to use that for babies.

Is there anything I can do to make it acceptable? Rinse it, for example?

Gosh I'm really struggling to do dairy-free BLW.

TIA

I wouldn't have even thought about the brine

drain it and it'll be fine I'm sure

MrsDaffodill · 12/04/2011 10:25

Yes, you can rinse it.

RunforFun · 12/04/2011 10:26

Agree with Trinity.

I asked my HV about the salt levels in tinned mackerel. She looked madly at me and said the benefits of oily fish outweighed the miniscule amount of salt.

I had a PFB too Grin

Thanks very much!

I thought it would be ok, but I was worried I was being lax.

Lol RunforFun. The problem is that I'm not normally very PFB with him, so I'm not sure if I've gone too far. But I'm definitely starting to develop PFBitis with weaning.

The only thing to consider is how often you are giving tuna. More than twice a week is generally thought a bad thing because of the mercury levels. I don't know how strong the scientific evidence is behind that.

FlingonTheValiant · 12/04/2011 10:43

Thanks meditrina. That shouldn't be a problem. I actually hate fish. I'm just forcing myself because some is good for him. Very little chance it'll be more than once a week for tuna, and maybe once something else.

Just rinse it if it's in brine. We just had fish and chips at the quality eat-in chippy in town. LO (30 weeks) ate quarter of my fish, and two chips, then half a banana and drank two doidy cups of water. Soooo proud!

Seona1973 · 12/04/2011 13:38

there is only a limit on fresh tuna, not tinned tuna so I wouldnt worry about the amounts. We always used tuna in spring water or oil as it is less salty than tuna in brine

Fling, I'm guessing you've got a dietician on board if your LO needs a DF diet? Has she not given you some help with weaning? I purée weaned my LO with dairy (+ others) allergy, so not massive help to you with finger type food - sorry. The BLW forum site has an allergy section, so those guys will have a load of recipes I guess.

FlingonTheValiant · 13/04/2011 20:48

Hi hwhite, we haven't seen a dietician yet. The GP has referred us to an allergy clinic, although they think it's just a dairy intolerance rather than an allergy. Unfortunately the appointment isn't until the beginning of May.

The GP has been useless to be honest. They stalled doing anything about it, refused to refer me back to the paeds who first suggested it was CMPI, and are still telling me that it's only my theory - which I suppose it is because I couldn't get him seen again. But I stopped dairy and he got loads better, I challenged him and he got loads worse, I stopped again and he got better.

Anyway, they told me that as he's 6 months I had to start weaning him, and just not give him any dairy. I asked about ensuring he got enough calcium etc and they just um-ed and ah-ed and said the allergy paed would hopefully refer me to a dietician. I dread to think how long it's all going to take, and in the meantime I'm trying to read about it on the internet.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm really annoyed and stressed by the whole thing. It's bloody hard feed him a DF diet, but the GP said it'd be easy because I'm not eating dairy so I can BF. Well yes, but I'm also taking supplements. And my diet is now quite limited while I try to get to grips with it.

Plus his reflux has come back the last few days and I really thought the DF diet had seen it off :(

Sorry, meant to say thanks for the tip about the BLW site!
