Ok...I know every baby varies & I shouldnt compare but I am interested to know how much your 10 month old eats as my DD eats like a horse!!! She is very active & nearly walking but on an avarage day she will eat:

Breakfast
1 weetabix with formula milk
Sometimes 2 fingers of toast after
Lunch
Full jar of Baby food ie cow& gate for 10 months+ (I think these jars are BIG!) & a yogurt
Afternoon snack (as nursery give one so we keep it up at home)
toasted tea cake &/or fruit
Tea
Meat & Veg (proper dinner).
Supper
1/2 - Full bottle of formula

& then if she's hungry throughout the day I top her up with formula (she prob has approx 750 mls formula in total). She also drinks plenty of water.

She sits like a little sparrow with month open ready for the next mouthful & Im sure she'd carry on if I kept feeding her. She's not fat by any means & the health visitor is happy with her.

Opinions please........

I'm also curious about portion size for 9.5 month old DD, as I'm not at all sure I'm getting it right.

DD's breakfast is a Weetabix with cow's milk, and two thirds of a banana, so about the same as your DD I'd say.

She doesn't have jars, so it's difficult to compare the size of her other meals with your DD's. I think I'd feel more confident with jars, though, in terms of knowing how much to give. I just offer DD food until she stops taking it, which I'm not sure is right, but don't know how else to judge it!

How much in volume is her tea? If it were meat and veg DD would probably eat 2-3 sticks of parsnip and half a chicken thigh, followed by a couple of small yoghurts.

In terms of formula, she has 2 or 3 bottles of 210 ml a day.

She's 98th centile for weight, and 91st for length.

The top of a bit of brocolli and a breadstick - on a good day. :(

Plus breastmilk on tap.

FanjoForTheMusic · 12/04/2011 20:53

fifitot, are you BLW?

fifitot · 12/04/2011 21:01

Yes sort of but not by choice. More by default since the little devil refuses all food from a spoon and tbh he doesn't show much interest in food full stop!

FanjoForTheMusic · 12/04/2011 21:13

We've been doing BLW in that we haven't pureed anything, but we do spoonfeed stuff that's already runny eg yoghurt. Because it's all a bit more flexible than jars I just keep offering food, but don't want to overfeed, particularly as DD is already so ginormous.

Sorry OP, don't want to turn this into a BLW hijack! I had a quick look in the birth to 5 book, and couldn't find any guidance in terms of portion size. OP, what centile is your DD?

nightnighty · 12/04/2011 22:41

My 10 month old ds has been riding 91st centile, he's still breast fed on demand and has only just started getting enthusiastic about eating. Still some days more than others. Still not a big mover although he's speeding up quickly.

When he's having a good day now eats a couple of mouthfuls of banana for breakfast.
Maybe a couple of mouthfuls of toast later in the morning, or a rice cake. Maybe some apple, more banana and/or dried fruit. Then usually some left overs from our meal previous night for lunch and or tea, along several handfuls of freshly steamed brocolli. Sometimes roast or smoked salmon with brocolli. A few of drops of water.

Overall he doesn't each much I'd say, but he's still quite a round baby anyway. He gets bored with food quickly, so I always just offer him handfuls or spoonfuls of food until he starts pushing it away repeatedly or throwing it straight on the floor.

I read somewhere that babies only take what they need, and that you can't over feed them really...? OP I wouldn't worry, I'd assume your DD will eat what she needs. Does she ever start to reject food?

Sorry for late reply.....
We've not had her weighed/measured for a while but are constantly at the docs with coughs, colds etc & I have mentioned in passing her height & weight & they have been happy with her (just by lookingHmm) Maybe its time I took her for weighing etc

"Proper food" wise she will eat a table spoon of mash, a piece of broccoli, a piece of cauliflower, about 4 carrot sticks & a slice of meat followed by some sort of pudding...yogurt or about 10 teaspoons of "adult" pudding...ie crumble & custard, chocolate sponge & ice cream. Im sure she'd eat the lot if I let her

She does refuse food but only if she doesnt like it (not often) or is not well.Im sure she would stop if she was full but just how much she'd eat if I continued to feed her until she was full is anybodys guess!!!
