Hi,

My baby is nearly 6 months old. We have been trying to give her water from a cup. She is enjoying chewing on a doidy cup and occasionally drink some water from it but it is accidental! We bought her a tommee tippee first sips cup here but although she enjoys chewing on it no water is really coming out. Is it faulty or are they meant to be hard work?! I have squeezed the teat and nothing comes out-I've even had a go and you had to suck really hard to hey anything!!

What cup do people recommend? How much water should she be drinking now? She is formula fed now and has 2 meals of solids a day.

Thanks!

We use the Tommee Tippee essentials first cup, have done since DS was first on solids. He still uses it now at 12months, so I would say it is a good cup. I think if you make sure she has access to water at meal times, and offered to her throughout the day, she will soon get the hang of it and will be able to regulate her own intake.

How do you feed her? If breastfed then I was advised by health visitor to use free flow cups as they can't suck hard enough of those cups with a valve...

I used the tommee tippee first cup with a flip out spout. It is freeflowing so it is easy to get the fluids out

Yes, a bit too easy at times....

We just use the doidy cup but it did take our LO a few weeks to really get the hang of it to the point where she doesn't need any help to tilt the cup and also doesn't wave it about (spilling the contents) before drinking from it. We just persevered with it, and at every meal and snack time I offer water. The other day when we were sitting in the garden and it was hot she also had water without a snack. 4 weeks into using the cup she started grabbing it and drinking eagerly and easily without any help. It's not even that messy (we don't have any carpets though!) as long as she's wearing a cotton or toweling bib to absorb liquid, is sitting in her high chair, and/or has a small towel over her legs to catch any spills. Last wee she even managed a drink sitting on a rug in the library without a spill! Also, when out and about, if she's on my knee for a drink, I put her back against my chest and face her away from me so I can look over her shoulder and see the water going into her mouth and can easily catch the cup before she starts waving it about or drops it.

If you're really worried, you could try giving her water in a bottle (as this is what she's used to). I think the cup you've linked to might have a valve in it, which actually makes it quite hard work to drink from - try the essentials one. My son never really got the doidy cup - he's gone straight from the essentials beaker to a plastic cup.

My guy is almost 2.5 and he still has his milk from a bottle x 3 times a day. He wants to drink from a cup but he walks around with it, spills it, blows bubbles..well, you know..
He uses a sippey cup for juice and I wondered could anyone advise me on which type of cup,(make and model, please..) that he should drink his milk from. It needs to hold 8oz.
All advice welcome and appreciated.

does he still take 3 x 8oz of milk? They only need around 12oz per day from 1 year. My 2 had a cup of milk along with breakfast and a cup of milk before bed from 1 year - they werent allowed to walk about with it. I used a cow patterned cup or the avent magic cup for milk as both had a (removeable) valve which cut down on spills.

Thank you Seona. I am a first time Mum and learnng every day..
When Liam had his age 2 dev check up they told us that 22oz per day was what he should be having but I'm sure I could cut that down a bit.
Again, thank you for your advice and I will try the avent cup.
