My DD is DC1 and just turned 6 months. So this is my first experience of finding out that new evidence shows that what I have been doing in good faith is now wrong. And it feels horrid Sad.

How awful. And what with the formaldehyde in vax they're little brains are really having to deal with such a lot. I suppose at least with the baby food they're a little bit older. And not everyone buys jars.

Yet another brilliant reason for mushing your own beans.

Don't buy them! Just purée/ mash what you're using, making sure you don't cook with salt or sugar
What's vax?

Hmmm...this is a bit misleading really. The article is not about all jars etc or random jars. It says that rice , which is obviously used to make baby rice, can sometimes have minute levels of arsenic etc in it. As adults this level is fine for us but might not be fine for babies. The emphasis is on a big, big might.

So the message is that we should perhaps stop feeding our babies so much rice , rather than jars per se, just that jars can have baby rice in them. Their main issue is with babies who have high amounts of baby rice several times a day and even then the exposure is minimal and they don't know whether it is an issue. They are just speculating.

But that doesnt sell papers....

Exactly - it's not the jars per se. It's grains in general - rice, oats and wheat - that are cited as containing "too much" of the heavy metals. I cook everything for DD - but obviously she has grains. Oh, sod it.

oh sorry vaccinations Smile

would organic be ok then?

cardamomginger · 10/04/2011 08:10

Nope - it's to do with the soil it's grown in. One of the brands found to contain "too high" levels is Organix. Just had a look at one of the articles linked to the one above. The issue of arsenic in rice has been around for a few years. This second article says that highest levels are found in rice from USA, France, Italy and Bangladesh. Lowest levels in rice from India and Egypt.
