Ds is 5 months old and I've been weaning him onto baby rice and veg for the last week.He loves both but I'm running out of ideas. My hv told me he should have 3 different veg at each mealtime and so far he's had carrot, swede, brocolli, sweet potato, and cauliflower and now I'm stuck as to what else to try.
Can veg like peas, aubergines and courgettes be given yet or is it best to stick with veg without skin? Sorry to sound really thick, but I haven't got a clue.

TIA.

I think your hv is talking out of her...ahem.

Why should he have 3 different types of veg each mealtime? 5 months is early to start weaning, but if you feel you must, he only needs the basics such as banana, carrot, avocado. You can go very slowly with weaning, there's no rush. Introducing too many foods too early is just likely to cause problems. Hope this helps...

If your HV has told you that he needs three different veg at each mealtime at 5 months old then your HV needs a smack. You should introduce foods one at a time, he doesn't need full meals at this stage. You can give veg like courgettes from the start but it's best just to stick to a small amount of a single food at a time for a while - he should still be getting most of his calories from milk.

Yes,definitely talking through her arse.

You sound like you're doing just fine bubbaloo.

I was really surprised too.
She came to see us and asked if I'd started him on solids. When I said I thought I should wait till 6 months, she told me she advises people to wean from 4 months.
She also told me not to give him any fruit,as he'll get "a taste" for sweet things and won't eat savoury things and also not to give him any wheat/gluten foods.I'm actually intollerant to lots of foods,so I suppose that bit actually made sense.
Ds is only 5 months, but he's a very big baby(19lbs),has more than doubled his birth weight and seems to love his veg,so I'm not too worried about starting him early, but I was very shocked that my hv reccommended weaning at 4 months!
Think I'll probably stick just to the veg that I've been giving him and see how that goes.

Jesus (sorry for the any offence caused) is your HV due to retire! I'm not one for violence but I agree she needs a smack! Hello, the current guideline is 6 months, but should not be weaned before 4 months because they don't have the enzymes in the stomach to digest starch etc.

My understanding is to introduce new foods slowly so you know if they are producing a reaction - if not they feel free to mix them. I found the Annabel Karmel book - The Complete Baby & Toddler Meal Planner - really helpful. My dd has just turned one - and I still use it.

I waited until my dd was 24 weeks and I didn't have to do much of the puree/baby rice stage - big plus!

Thanks Hotmama1-I've heard lots of good things about that book so maybe I'll get myself a copy.I think she is actually due to retire shortly.

DD is 5 months old and I have been weaning her for the lasy 2 weeks. She has had carrots, sweet potato, butternut squash, swede, brocolli, cauliflower, strawberries, pineapple, pear, mandarins, banana etc. I usually give her a meal of one fruit or veg and a yoghurt after to keep up her milk levels. I have started to mix in with dd's food flavours such as nutmeg, cinammon and even cheese just to add more taste.
Hopefully I should be able to start on wheat & meat within the next 2 weeks, HTH.

My HV was also a waste of space...I seem to have weaned dd by following my instincts.

NotQuiteCockney · 29/10/2005 07:42

Um, strawberries aren't good to have early, as they are allergenic. I think mandarins are, as well.

If you're using commercial baby yogurts, they have a lot of sugar in them, and aren't great for kids.

And wheat, and dairly products (including cheese) shouldn't really be introduced before 6 months. Well, no food should.

And yeah, bubbaloo's HV is talking rubbish. Your baby doesn't need solids before six months, but if you must wean, just give simple stuff. Fruit is fine, as long as you stick to the non-allergenic ones. She is right about not giving wheat this early.
