Purees and milk!

Hi,

My baby is 5 and a half months and we have started weaning. She is currently having 2 meals a day. One fruit and one veg at the mo! I'm jus wondering other peoples timings giving the purees and milk! At the moment I am trying to give her the purée around 30-45 mins before she is due a feed, so she is hungry but not TOO hungry, and then her milk after. Should I leave a gap between purée and food so she drinks all her milk still or is it expected that she starts drinking less?

Thanks

I would do it the other way round and give milk first and the solids later as milk is still most important at this stage

So should she not be dropping any milk then? She hasn't dropped a feed as such, it's just she doesn't finish any of her feeds anymore. But surely her food will be filling her up a bit?

At this stage food is in addition to milk and is about new tastes and textures, not to fill her up. As she takes more food she will naturally cut back on milk. At that age ds still had 5 milk feeds (one was in the night) and only dropped to 4 feeds at 8 months (the night feed thankfully!). He cut back on his milk by himself and was down to just the morning and bedtime feed by 10 1/2 months. There is no rush to cut her milk so I would be guided by her - you dont want her dropping too much milk too quickly as milk provides most of her nutrition at this age.

Thankyou! She is still having 5 feeds a day and quite often a 6th in the night, so technically an "extra" feed! She still has all the feeds but instead of drinking 7oz she quite often has 3 or 4 instead. However at her bedtime bottle she has 8oz and if she wakes in the night she also has 8. I'm not trying to get her to drop a feed at all (though I wouldn't mind missing the night one!!!) I'm just checking that her naturally not finishing her feeds is ok?!

Thanks

I would do the same as Seona - food an hour after milk. You want to maintain her milk intake especially as she's not 6 months yet.

The other thing is if she fills up on puree in the day she can't take enough milk to meet her calorie needs, so she's going to keep waking for a feed in the night. If you keep up the milk intake in the day then hopefully it'll be the nightfeed that reduces.

My DD is 5.5months too. and having purees and some finger foods, only 2 weeks into it, and i think she is doing well.

before this, she was feeding every 2 hours in the day and having 1 to 2 feeds in the night (between 7pm-5/6am) (I am breastfeeding)

So when she wakes up for "the start of the day" properly 7:30ish i'll give her a feed, she'll then be awake then nap again at 9ish. then after hat she'll have her brekkie. or if she naps through this she'll have it for lunch around 12noon. then dinner at 5/6.... having lots of milk in the day and then feed before bath, then top up after if wanted.

she just seems more disturbed in the night? fidgety, and especially around 4 am ish she'll be wide awake chatting away... maybe as its getting lighter???

Hi all

I was going to start a thread with a similar question to OP but thought i'd add to this one if that's okay!

My DS is 5.5 months and was on 5 9oz milk feeds a day (feeds had got bigger and bigger and closer together so started to ween.) Trouble is, i was feeding a lunchtime puree/baby rice meal between milk feeds, but find that he then doesn't want his next bottle. I don't expect him to continue with 9oz feeds, but am not sure how much milk he needs and am worried he's not getting enough!

Help!

From 6 months to 12 months they need at least 21oz.

How much of a gap is there between food and milk?

TheRealDarkMavis · 04/04/2011 21:12

Thanks Rita.

Well, since we were on 4 hourly feeds prior to weaning, i've tried to keep to that to keep things simple. But, as i'm aware to treat solid meals as extra i'm trying to keep him on 4 hourly milk feeds, but sometimes it's more like 5 hours until the next milk feed when he's had the solid in between IYSWIM!!
Otherwise, he still takes milk feeds every 4 hours, thanks! :-)
