Just wondering really, did everyone wait until the six month mark or did people just do it when they thought their child was 'ready'?

OP posts:

I waited until 6 months. The wee man had been watching me eat for a while but i wasn't taking any risks as he already had 1 allergy. My milk was filling enough for him so was in no rush. X

Seona1973 · 26/03/2011 20:29

dd was at 16 weeks (as per the guidelines then) and ds was at about 23 weeks (didnt quite make it to 6 months!)

girliefriend · 26/03/2011 20:33

I waited til 5 months as dd was ready imo (sitting up, interested in food, putting things in her mouth) and never looked back, dd never been much of a milk fan but loves her food!!!

However I did take it very slowly, I personally think a blanket policy of 6 months for every baby is ridiculous but thats my opinion! Grin

Panzee · 26/03/2011 20:37

About a week shy of 6 calendar months.

RitaMorgan · 26/03/2011 20:40

22 weeks - I do think 26 weeks is probably the safest option, but anything after 17 weeks is fine if the baby is ready.

People who wean before 17 weeks because they think their baby is ready do make he Hmm though.

Jojay · 26/03/2011 20:43

6 months with both of them - maybe a week or so earlier coming to think of it.

They both seemed to 'wait' easily enough tbh. I'm not that convinced of the 'but he needs it' argument that you hear bandied about.

likingthespring · 26/03/2011 21:24

I learned today that a relative of mine is weaning her baby of 4 months. She's giving him jars, rusks and Weetabix Shock. Poor lad is constipated and always crying apparently.

washnomore · 26/03/2011 21:28

26 weeks with my first, this one started at 23 weeks simply because she's sitting better, grabbing better and already eating better than he was. At 27 weeks she's seriously gutsy and had cauliflower, carrot, boiled tatties and a fistful of cheese sauce for dinner. Reckon she's going to be a waif like her mum Grin

Nagoo · 26/03/2011 21:31

Ds was 18 weeks. He was massive though.

DD is 18 weeks and not really that interested in my dinner, going reasonable lengths of time between Bfs, so I'm in no rush.

Nagoo · 26/03/2011 21:32

likingthesping I've had a similar conversation and just feel really :( but it really isn't my business. It does make you Hmm though.

ShowOfHands · 26/03/2011 21:35

When dd was ready. 27ish weeks.

Nagoo, dd was massive too at 27 weeks, about the same number of lbs in fact! I took that to mean that my milk was doing an excellent job. Grin

reallytired · 26/03/2011 21:42

24 weeks. DD grabbed a handful of curry and made it quite clear she had no intention of waiting until 26 weeks.

With DS I started at 19 and half weeks. It was hellish as he was not ready for food until 8 months. The guidelines back then was to start at 4 months and have your baby on three meals a day by 6 months. It caused me terrible anxiety the fact that my son would not eat.

I think that the La Leche League guidelines of looking for development readiness makes more sense than an arbitary date. Ie. can your baby sit up without support, pick up food and eat it. Waiting until around 6 months means that a baby eats PROPER food rather than different coloured liquids.

jandmmum · 27/03/2011 06:08

At 22weeks I told the HV I was waiting til 26 weeks.as I wanted to do blw. At 23 weeks DD have different ideas as she started grabbing food out my hand and eating. I took that as a sign she was ready and we haven't looked back. She's a fantastic little eater and eats practically anything she has been offered with the exception of porridge!

GotArt · 27/03/2011 06:21

DD weaned herself at 20 months. She began eating solids, bananas and mangos, at 5 months and at 6 months I started her on rice cereal and so forth.

InspirationalBreadbin · 27/03/2011 08:12

21 weeks. Was sitting up unassisted from about 19 weeks, and was clearly ready. I did my research and decided that between 17-26 weeks seemed to be the best age in a developed world country.

sweetkitty · 27/03/2011 08:33

DD1 about 25 weeks
DD2 about 25 weeks
DD3 about 24 weeks
DS well 20 weeks as he was a huge boy and I was so sleep deprived I was willing to give anything a try, so wish I had waited a few spoonfuls of puree made no difference, don't know what I was thinking.

Weaning never really took off until post 6 months when they could sit up and eat by themselves.

and IMHO

Weaning does absolutely nothing to make a baby who does not sleep through sleep through the night!

MarioandLuigi · 27/03/2011 08:36

DS1 was 16 weeks - that was the guideline then.
DS2 was 9 weeks :( - He has poor mouth muscles and found sucking difficult. He also had severe reflux and lost alot of weight.
DD2 was about 7 months - She just loved milk so much and didnt seem bothered with food.

CMOTdibbler · 27/03/2011 08:45

26 weeks - I knew waiting wouldn't harm him, and there was possibly a chance that earlier could, so as someone with coeliac disease I didn't want to question myself later if there was something I could have done

molejazz · 27/03/2011 09:11

23 weeks. He seemed ready, DP and I were ready, there seemed no point in waiting for permission's sake for another 3 weeks. He loved it from the start and ate much sooner than I expected him too.

Sirzy · 27/03/2011 09:21

Ds was weaned at 19 weeks on the advice of hv as he was taken a stupid amount of milk. We took it slowly and by 7 months he was happily eating "normal" foods!
