small pasta with sauces (if spaghetti bol make sure you cut up strands very very small. better maybe to use those tiny shells or something. you can get lots of veg into sauces

shepherds pie/cottage pie. plop onto the highchair and stand back

chicken casserole and rice - make one for you and dh and chop up tiny bits of chicken/mushroom, mix with rice and plop on tray

baked potato and cheese - mix in the cheese and potato together in the skin and give it to him when it has cooled

also banana cucumber melon avocado all good things to hold and chew

You could even give him a drumstick - he won't make much of a dent but will have fun trying

make sure you are lurking around so you can tip him upside down if he chokes!

It sounds like just what my DS did. He ate a few bits, but didn't really go for whole meals until he was about 11 month. Given his age, he can really have anything from your plate as long as it's not loaded with sugar or salt, no whole nuts and no honey.

Try finger sandwiches, strips of pitta with hummus, cream cheese mini-wraps, toast, bagels, cheese on toast, bread strips, rice cake, baby crisps, rich tea finger biscuits, dried fruit (raisins, sultanas, apricots, figs etc), sticks of fruit or cooked veg, cucumber, peppers, halved baby tomatoes, cooked pasta, strips of cooked meat, sausages or meatballs. Appropriate 'dippers' with a pot of cheese or tomato sauce or hummus or yoghurt.

Around this age, my DS began to show me that there are many things which I would not have classed as finger foods, which in fact are, for example stew, macaroni cheese, baked beans, roast dinner etc. So I'd suggest that you just start handing over whatever you're eating (or a baby version of it!) and see how he handles it.

have you tried giving him a spoon so he can have a go feeding himself? DD went through a phase of spitting out anything i spooned in. But if i gave her a spoon to hold herself magically she got very interested in the food again.

While she was trying to get the food on the spoon, i could feed her. It was a much more satisfying experience all around though it did get a bit messy.
