How can I get dd to drink more fluids?

She is 7 months now and I started weaning just before 6 months. She is now on 3 good meals a day together with 4 breastfeeds.

The problem I have though (I am assuming it is a problem) is that I can't get get to drink water or diluted juice either from a bottle or a cup.

She's never had a bottle as she has been exclusively breastfed. I have a Tomme Tippee cup which I try to get her to drink from (it sort of drips if you tip it up so I hold in her mouth and waggle it a bit to give the idea!) but she is really not interested. Closes her mouth and turns her head away.

Any ideas please? Or am I worrying unnecessarily? Will she get all the fluids she needs from breastmilk and water in food?

i have the non-srip tommee tippee ones, dd3 bits the teat and the water comes out.

but i think generally they are still getting enough from breastfeeds and food atm. dd3 often has a quick snack feed in the afternoon.

Have you tried an ordinary cup? An eggcup is sometimes of better proportions for a baby's mouth. Or spoonfeeding her liquid? Just to give her a taste. All she needs is water, but you could flavour it with very dilute juice or even give her cool herb tea (chamomile or fennel are best).

Neither of mine took to drinking very well when they were weaned. As long as her poos are soft and comfortable to pass then she's getting enough water. It's only if they get hard or dry, or she struggles to pass them then she will need more water in her diet. Unfortunately most youngsters aren't able to recognise thirstiness and ask for a drink!

No problems with poo! Guess she's ok then .
