BLW and 'stage 2' foods

just started blw with dd who is 5.5mo. just done baby rice and thick puree on a spoon that I handed to her, just to test her readyness. well, she got that spoon right to her mouth and happily sucked away.
I'm keen to try some finger food and will give her steamed carrot sticks tonight but can I give her the Organix stage 2 snacks like rice cakes and corn rings or do I have to wait till 7mo, like the packet says?

dd has had them since 6 months. Don't know why they say 7 months she's been perfectly capable of eating them from the off and there isn't really anything to say they can have anything at 7 months that they can't at 6. Watch out for the carrot sticks though, they turn your child into an umpa lumpa! Smile

Generally with BLW you just give your baby pieces of normal food and let them get on with it - if she can manage rice cakes and corn rings then let her.

thanks. tried the corn rings and she managed them better than the steamed carrot sticks and bits of pear I gave her, which kept slipping out her hands before she could get it to her mouth.

My ds couldn't manage pear or avocado at all, too slippery. Try roasted veg sticks like potato, sweet potato, parsnip, carrot - easier for them to get a grip on.

good idea about roasting the veg, I steamed it in the microwave and it was a bit rubbery. was asking about the rice cakes so I could put mashed banana and avocado on them so she could lick it off. might try it this morning. don't know who OS having more fun, me or her

Glad to hear you're enjoying it! She should be fine with the rice cakes, my DD couldn't chew them very well to start off with but she got the hang of it eventually.

I used to mash banana and avocado straight onto the high chair tray, she could scoop up big handfuls into her mouth and loved it.

oooh, lumping on the high chair is a good idea, though I think ill save that for before bathtime. then again, don't know if she will get what to do with it. she puts finger food to her month and she will suck mush off a spoon but when it falls off the spoon she just plays with it, moving it around the table but she never licks it off her fingers.

If you find stuff is too slippy get a crinkle cutter (like a potato masher with a zigzag edge). I got mine off Amazon for a quid and it really helped ds pick up loads of stuff.

Also you can leave the skin on a lot of things like avocado - they will learn which bits taste nice!

Re mess - DD eats in just her vest, then I often put her clean top on over the dirty vest and visitors are none the wiser... until the next mealtime!
