Help with gagging baby

Hi all, my DS is 7 months and seems to gag on any food I give him. Been trying for just over a month, with no luck. I've tried very runny baby rice, to thick stodge, nothing seems to help. Tried different tastes, finger foods, different times of the day, but no joy. He seems so ready to eat, everything goes in the mouth and really watches me eat, but he just doesn't seem to have worked out how to swallowed. Is he just not ready? Any advice welcome. TIA

Still has gag reflex - so not ready. You may want to see doctor for peace of mind.

Thank you, I suggested he wasn't ready to hv and she said that he should be by now. She suggested trying different tastes and times etc. Think I may have to to see doctor just to fill happy about him.

My dd gagged on food up until about a week ago although she still managed to swallow it, I think it was when she had too much in her mouth, why not try just giving very tiny mouthfuls and see what happens? oops forgot to say she's 9 months old now! Anyway just a suggestion hth

lol i thought yuou wanted help with gagging your baby!

erm... have you tried letting him suck it from the spoon, using a very runny consistency? it takes a while to learn to swallow but he might get used to it if you start with sucking iyswim?

and also agree with luvlymum about the teeny tiny spoonfuls,.

let her have rice cakes and things that he can just chew on and get the feel of in his mouth

MOF2DB · 23/10/2005 19:52

Tried really small spoonfuls, but the same effect.

Did try rice cakes and was optimistic for awhile, until he was sick. He started to gag a bit, then he seemed like he was managing to move the bits around in his mouth. Eventually he was gagging loads and was really sick. I'd even left it a couple hours after giving him milk.

Think he's just not ready, gone give the poor darling a week off I think and then try the whole food thing again.
Thanks for help though.

cant give you any advice other than to say my ds still has to be watched he is now two and a half. but until he was two he gagged at least once a meal, whether it be meat or chocolate buttons. Even friends would get alarmed. No it is only a couple of times a months - he tends to chew meat remove it and then rechew. He still wont really fully consume anything that require a lot of chewing. If he has ham by the end of his meal half will be consumed the other half regurgitated on his plate the floor the chair etc. Even chewy sweets have the same effect often removed after chewing for a while - jelly babies stick to everything. I didnt have this problem with dd1 his older sister so it has just been a nightmare - he didnt have satsumas until he was 18 months old and only really regularly since 2. I'm not much of a chewer either so I dont know if it is hereditary!

what I meant to say is that it might be something that you just have to let him grow out of. I restricted many chewy things for so long I figured he would never learn - he is much better but dinner I feel will be a tense time for a while yet.

He sounds like he's not quite ready. No reason not to give him finger foods that don't come off in great mouthfulls, like a whole raw carrot, Bickipegs, fat chunks of peeled apple, a crust end-slice of bread dried out in a low oven or toasted, etc.

Somewhere on the web I've seen a device a bit like a cross between a laundry net and a dummy, where you put a piece of food in a net and the baby can gum at the food through the net but large chunks cannot get through the net.
