Easy chicken puree recipes?

GillL · 21/10/2005 12:29

Does anyone know any easy chicken puree recipes? I am going to cook chicken for dd (7 months) for the first time. The Annabel Karmel book 'my first chicken puree' recipe takes about 3 hours to cook - and that's not including preparation time! I normally cook after dd's gone to bed but, at that rate, it'll be midnight before I get to bed.

I used to wrap a breast in foil with a tsp of water and poach/bake it in the oven for 30 mins. Then chop it up and mix with veg puree, then puree again.

I just puree whatever veggies are ledt over from roast dinner with some pieces of leftover chilcken and milk to loosen the mix
ds loves it

Annabel's 'one pot chicken' (next page on from 1st chicken puree!) went down really well with my two and cos it's all done in the one pan it doesn't take too long! be warned though, with both carrot AND sweet potato in there it's a bugger to get out of ANYTHING!! reommend a large tea towel and a peg when feeding!

GillL · 21/10/2005 12:40

That sounds much easier Enid. I bought a whole chicken - do you think I should cut the meat off the bone first and then casserole? I've got loads of veg I can add.

Lucyfercat - do you use water instead of stock?

It wouldn't be a problem if dh wasn't working nights this weekend and next weekend. Then I'd at least have a chance at following the recipe.

yes, not being one to make my own stock (life is just too short!!) I use water and it's fine! Really easy to freeze too.

Enid · 21/10/2005 12:55

tbh gill I would use the breasts only if it is her first go at it (the dark meat is stronger flavoured). You can roast the legs for you or to have cold for chicken sandwiches and use the carcass for some lovely soup or stock.

NotQuiteCockney · 21/10/2005 12:56

Pureed chicken is kinda gross.

DS2, at 7 months, would happily take a chip-shaped bit of roast chicken and gnaw on it.

Lucyfercat · 21/10/2005 12:56

I never really followed the quantities either - just did what looked about right!

The other recipe that mine both loved is actually in the 9-12 months section and was the Chicken with apple,(page 98 in my book) also using water instead of stock!

GillL · 21/10/2005 12:57

Thanks. I'm sure dd won't mind me using water instead of stock

I boil the leftover chicken and carcass from roast dinner for half an hour. Remove all the bones, then add spinach, green beans, brussels sprouts, onion and potato. Simmer it for another half an hour then puree. DD absolutely devours it. Cannot understand it myself, it stinks and tastes revolting, but long may she eat it!

Others I used to do were cubed chicken breast, parsnip and formula, bring to boil, simmer for 20 mins then blend. Or the same with chicken breast leek, potatoes and formula. They're from Sara Lewis's book and all her recipies were chop, put in saucepan, boil, simmer, blend. My type of cooking! I closed Annabel Karmel's book when I got to "add your home made chicken stock".

GillL · 21/10/2005 14:41

Chicken breast, leek and potatoes sounds nice. I'll try that one. Thanks Surfermum.

Try the thighs. Used to do breast for DD but found it very dry. The thighs are lovely and moist and tastier. I add a bit of water when pureeing as it's a bit too stodgy otherwise. She has it pureed with butternut/sweet potato/ broccoli and cauliflower in cheese sauce or (her favourite) avocado and banana. She is 7 and a half months by the way.

Surfermum can you tell me wot Sara Lewis's bok is called. I got Annabel Carmel's book out from the library then went out and got a load of jars of baby food. Would like to try any quicker recipes.

here's one I made this week:-

Steamed two chicken breasts and pureed them into revolting mulch that looked and smelled exactly like Shipham's paste

Added some tinned tomatoes until mixture looked like raw meat

scratched head

Cooked some chopped onions in unsalted butter and added to a bowl of couscous with raisins

Pureed the lot. Tastes lovely. Have frozen in batches, which will need some hot water added to get the consistency right before baby eats them.

But "steamed chicken with tomatoes, onions, raiains and cous-cous" sounds so bloody smug!
