Can I keep home-cooked baby rice in the fridge for a few days?

I am going to start my 5 1/2 month DS on solids next week, kicking off with some home-made baby rice (prepared with breast milk) mixed with fruit and veg purees.

I know that badly stored/reheated rice is potentially very dangerous. I eat a lot of leftover rice and am careful to thoroughly reheat it and have never had any problems, but am anxious about whether this is sensible for a baby. Then again, it seems crazy to prepare a tiny amount each day, or to re-heat a frozen portion only 24 hours after I prepared it...

What do you do? Is there any official FSA advice on this that you know of?

normal cooked rice should be eaten within 24 hours (after being refridgerated) so I wouldnt keep rice intended for a baby any longer than that. When I used the powdered baby rice I made it up as and when I needed it.

from food standards agency:

It's true that you could get food poisoning from eating reheated rice. But it's not actually the reheating that's the problem ? it's the way the rice has been stored before reheating.

Uncooked rice can contain spores of Bacillus cereus, bacteria that can cause food poisoning. When the rice is cooked, the spores can survive. Then, if the rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores will germinate into bacteria. These bacteria will multiply and may produce toxins (poisons) that cause vomiting or diarrhoea. Reheating the rice won't get rid of these toxins.

So, the longer cooked rice is left at room temperature, the more likely it is that bacteria, or the toxins they produce, could stop the rice being safe to eat.

It's best to serve rice when it has just been cooked. If that isn't possible, cool the rice as quickly as possible (ideally within one hour) and keep it in the fridge for no more than one day until reheating.

Remember that when you reheat any food, you should always check that it's steaming hot all the way through, and avoid reheating more than once

Thanks both. It's just not worth the risk, is it? I'm going to freeze the spare portions and defrost and re-heat as I need them.

I would just make it up as you go along, really it takes about 3 seconds to make, quicker than defrosting a frozen portion.

It tastes pretty gross so I don't think many babies stay on it after the first few weeks anyway. Think wallpaper paste.

From 6 months you can use cow's milk if the EBM is going to be the problem.
