how much milk and when at 1yo - please tell me your routines

DD is almost 1yo and is starting nursery next week. I am trying to adapt her routine to fit more in line with their day - eg they have an early lunch (11.30) so no point giving DD her usual mid morning bottle at 11ish as she just wouldn't eat any lunch!

That being said, I don't want to drastically reduce her intake of milk and so I am wondering what is the best way to go about this...

She still has a (quick) BF when she wakes around 6.30/7 and I will continue with this, but do most of you give a drink of milk with breakfast, or just water? Although she has milk on her cereal, she likes to self feed and eats things like mini weetabix lightly soaked in milk to make them soft, but not too soft for her to pick up IYSWIM? so she doesn't really have much milk there.

She still has a mid afternoon bottle and another before bed, but I know 1yo are meant to have about a pint a day and I am just not sure how to go about fitting this in.

If you could tell me roughly how you fit the milk into your DCs day, that would be great Smile

I think a pint a day is for under-1s - 12-24 months is only 350ml. At my ds's nursery they give them a beaker of milk with their snack mid-morning and mid-afternoon, but I think by 12 months lots of babies are just having milk morning and evening.

Thanks Rita. Everything i have read seems to say a pint, but some of the dairy can then come from cheese/yoghurts etc by that age. I still don't think 2 bottles a day sounds like it's enough...

the guidance is approx 350mls from 1 year and that amount can include milk in cereal, dairy, etc. Both mine just had milk to drink in the am and pm by then with the rest made up with cheese, yoghurt, etc.

From Babycentre website:
Milk, cheese and yogurt

Offer your child these foods about three times a day. Dairy products provide plenty of calcium for growing bones, but are extremely low in iron. Toddlers need less milk than babies and should not be given large bottles of milk. Offer about 120ml (4fl oz) of milk in a cup as a drink. In total, your toddler should have no more than 350ml (12fl oz) a day. Large drinks of milk will reduce your toddler's appetite for other foods, especially those higher in iron.

Children aged two and over can have whole milk for drinks, but could change to semi-skimmed milk if that is more convenient for the family. Semi-skimmed milk has similar amounts of protein and calcium, but is lower in vitamin A than whole milk. Skimmed milk should not be given to children under five years old.

You could consider using a growing-up milk if your toddler is a very faddy eater as these milks are fortified with some iron. Many toddlers who eat poorly do not get enough iron and may get iron deficiency anaemia.

Thanks Seona. That is great Smile

Presumably it's better to start phasing the milk out than to just decide that now DD is one she's not having as much...? maybe now she is starting nursery, the early lunch will help to get rid of the morning bottle and then we can just work on the afternoon one.

I would reduce it gradually.

DD is nearly 1, she has breastfeed when she wakes, cup of whole cow about 2pm (normally about 100-150ml), breastfeed in the evening before bath. Until recently the afternoon milk was also boob but I've switched over to make it easier when she goes to nursery.

Re the morning milk - with DD I just stopped offering and found she was happy enough with a handful of raisins and some water to keep her going until lunch.

I'm not sure yet what they will do at her nursery but I think I'll be fairly relaxed to go along with whatever they do during the day and continue with morning and evening breastfeeds for now. The joys of breastfeeding - you can't obsess about them getting exactly the right amount!

DS is 1 and has bottle of milk first thing and just before bed, none during the day but eats cheese and yogurts.

Good luck!

my 11 month old still has about 7 oz of milk at 11 am and 3pm and 7pm.
she also has three big meals...

how am i supposed to change this? she is very hungry.

and when she reaches one... do you just swap formula for whole milk? cold turkey?

and how do you switch to a cup/beaker? she drinks water from the cup but ends up only taking a sip or two tthen spilling the rest and making a right mess. if i put milk in there it will be such a waste! please help

My DS doesn't have ANY milk in bottles or beakers during the day.

When DS started nursery at 9 months, I took a bottle to have at 2.30pm, but by that time he wasn't really interested in it. After about 3 weeks, the full bottle would come back with him, offered, just refused.

Then he just simply weaned himself off altogether at 12 months. First it was 7pm bottle...would take less and less..eventually down to 2oz, then wouldn't bother at all and just chew on the teat and push away, so figured he didn't want it (at 11 months). The same went for 7am bottle at 12 months, so dropped that as well.
I offer him a beaker of cows milk before bed, probably has 1-2oz.

But he has milk with cereal (used to use grown-up ready to use milk for extra nutrients), yoghurts - those baby yoghurts that have 1/3 daily calcium intake, and he loves his cheese.

I would suggest dropping down to 2 bottles now, try with snacks instead, you might find she won't notice the difference.

Queen .....have you tried the spill-free beakers, recommend them initially until she gets used to holding it steady.
As for the milk, it wasn't a problem for us, but I know people who just swapped over to cows milk (warm in microwave for few secs), and others who mixed bit of each to wean off the taste gradually. eg. 5oz formula and 2oz cows, then 2 days later 4oz formula and 3oz cows, then decrease amount formula until non at all. HTH
