Normal porridge? Could add puree apple.

Doe shse like fruit purees?

IMO all jars look and probably taste the same, maybe some simple veg purees would be best.

Lynn - dd2 also loves her powedered cereals but I usually mix fruit in with it - grated apple, sieved kiwi, mashed banana etc. Or fruit compote which is 2oz each of dired apricots, prunes and peaches and one apple and pear. Cover the dried fruit with boiling water and simmer for 25 minutes, then add the peeled and chopped apple and pear and simmer for another 10-15 minutes. Puree. This is also nice mixed with natural yoghurt.

Dd2 loves baked butternut squash - cut a small squash in half, scoop out the seeds - mix together 1 tsp brown sugar, 1 tblsp orange juice, 1/2oz butter, 1 small diced courgette, 1 skinned chopped tomato - fill the cavities with this mixture, cover with foil and bake in a medium oven for 1 1/2 hrs. Scoop out the flesh and mash with the filling.

Annabel Karmel has some great recipes - (both the above are hers) - it's worth investing in one of her books, or I think she has a website as well.

Yeah loves her fruit purees which is one good thing I suppose. Thanks for the receipes I will give it a go. I didnt realise she could have so much non baby food already like butter and porridge....feeling bad now hope I've not held her back in any way? I suppose its obvious I'm first time mum!

What about the veg mixed in with parsnip? It's alot sweeter than potato. Just peel, slice and boil for about 8-10 mins until tender then mash. You could do all the veg together in one pan, drain and mash. Then gradually add in small bits of potato over time.

Oh - try sweet potato as well - dd loves that - well she loves anything orange really - sweet potato, butternut squash, carrot. All her bibs are stained a lovely orange shade .

steam cauliflower and make a white sauce (melt butter, stir in some plain flour, whisk in milk very gradually and let it thicken) grate in some nutmeg and heaps of grated cheese. whizz it up and freeze in ice cube trays. turn them out into freezer bags so you can defrost at will.

I've just put a couple of recipe books on the sale section if you're interested. Not Annabel Karmel but still really good.

if ds won't eat something I grate cheese on it for him, he is fascinated watching me do it and seems to enjoy the food more.
Try giving finger food as well, a chunk of banana, or potatoe even, it makes the eating it more fun (but more mess for you to clear up!).

DS has mashed banana (or grated apple) with millet porridge for breakfast, its easier to digest that oat porridge. Just mash the banana into the millet and add some boiling water.

as a very erratic cook, just to say that i have never made a good white sauce without following a formal recipe and measuring it all - otherwise i burn it. basically however much butter you use, you need the same amount of flour, and if you've used e.g. 1 oz of butter and 1oz of flour, try about half a pint of milk. It may take longer than you expect to thicken, e.g. 6 minutes, which is an eternity with a screaming baby.

But ds did love broccoli well steamed or boiled, then mashed up as much as required, with cheese sauce (i.e. white sauce with cheese grated into it).

Annabel K and others recommends toast but I always found it was too hard for ds to enjoy, so he nearly always has bread instead.

Boiled/new potatoes cut up can make a good finger food. I started ds on finger food much too early for him (6 months) and had to leave it for a while, but it's always worth trying as they love it and it speeds up the day when you can actually sit down and eat a meal together, rather than having to feed them with your stomach rumbling.

I never had the guts to do this myself, but I have heard of mothers who simply cook their meal, chew the food and give it to the baby on a spoon. Me, I would be too tempted to eat it. DS has learned to eat fast so that I don't nick his food.

I only use flour and milk to get a lovely creamy sauce. I find with mixing flour and butter together first, you start off with lumps before you start IYSWIM, so miss that part out.

Thanks everyone - not great at white sauce but still trying!!! Will need more pots & pans at this rate.
