Nappy rash linked to weaning?

My 24 week old woke up with the worst nappy area I've ever seen her with this morning. It was fine yesterday - she often gets a little dry flaky skin where the elastic cuffs of the nappy are and it can be pink, but this morning it was raw - lots of little open wounds, like scratches, rather than just being a bit red and flaky. For the last two weeks she's been starting to eat vegetables and cereals and last night she ate meat for the first time - roast chicken (along with roast potato and brocolli). She also had cheese for the first time yesterday (along with some clementine segments), so I'm just wondering if her starting to eat solids could be something to do with the sore skin, or just co-incidence? I'm very worried. The HV expressed concern about it at baby clinic this morning when I took my LO to be weighed. It is really sore, much worse than I've ever see her with before. It's not really a rash though so I don't think it's an allergic reaction and she seems fine in herself too, not ill or anything. It seems more like dry skin that's peeled off and left open raw looking and weepy skin underneath - my poor baby!

Oh, forgot to say, I don't know of it would make any difference to stomach acid/digestion, but she's not having purees, just feeding herself with what we're having.

Citruses did make DD2 bum sore. She is growing out of it at 1 yo.
she might also have a fungal infection (from the description)

I would get it checked out by GP - could be a strep infection. These are quite commonly picked up esp in nappy area which is warm wet and harbours infections easily. Might be a reaction to foods, but doesn't sound like it..but at least if you get it checked by doc they can rule out/confirm a strep of staph infection.
Incidentally if it is it can be easily cleared up with antibiotics - nappy cream can just make it worse.

Good luck - poor you and LO.

sorry that was strep OR staph infection...

Oh no, I hope not! I guess she's too young for me to put anti fungal cream (athlete's foot cream) on her if it's a fungal infection, so it'll just have to be a lot of nappy free time I think.

Yes, I'll see how it is in next few days, and go to GP if it doesn't clear by Wednesday.

I think GP to check it is not an infection, if it is nappy free time won't be enough.
Then may be one new food at a time when it is common culprits (kiwi, clementine, oranges, strawberries, some kind of cheeses, tomatoes...) so you know which/if one irritate your LO.

If it's a fungal infection she can be treated for it, so do see the GP. My ds had thrush when he was very little, and was prescribed an anti-fungal cream (daktarin), and then a anti-fungal plus hydrocortisone cream (canestan HC) which finally shifted it really quickly.

First available GPs appointment was Weds evening so we've booked that. Have bought disposables to use till then to see if they make any difference. We usually use Bum Genius pocket nappies. LO now has adult fingernail sized blisters around periphery of nappy area - where the nappy leg cuffs are and on her lower back where the nappy elastic circles her waist, though her actual bum still doesn't look too bad (a few slightly pink patches). It's the edges that have these blisters/flaky skin on them. LO's poo and sick do smell strongly today, quite different to usual, kind of acidic smell, so that might explain why she's developed this but it doesn't solve it so just hope GP can help if it's not looking better before then.

Update - LO's bum much much improved after using disposable nappies yesterday and overnight. Still rather dry and flaky but no more redness or raw skin. Her wees and poo does still smell really strong so we're still going to the docs to check she's OK, but I hate to admit that it looks like real nappies don't suit her - it could be that there's a lot of friction around the cuffs and waist now she's started sitting up and moving a bit more. We haven't changed what we wash the re-usables in (soap flakes or Ecover non bio), so I doubt it's that. We'll still go to the docs to rule out any underlying skin problem too - her Dad gets psoriasis so it worth checking that she doesn't. Thanks for all your replies!
