I'll be very interested when my DS's are grown up and having children of their own (well their wifes will LOL) to see what WHO recommends then.....research is ALWAYS throwing up new stuff - what was ok 10yrs ago, isn't now, and stuff that was ok 20yrs ago, "bad" 10yrs is ok now.......

Voice of reason as always hunker.

quite QoQ... i think we all have to trust our judgement as parents and do what we think is right

I know - just wondering really - all this "Who recommends x,y,z for breastfeeding and weaning" - but then there seems to be quite a few people who either gone for single vaccinations, or in a few cases not even vaccinated at all (which is perfectly ok by me - before anyone jumps on me).

Anyhow - off to watch Grand Designs now

startingtobepregnantcod · 19/10/2005 20:48

like it QoQ... like it!

hunkerpumpkin · 19/10/2005 22:16

The six-month guideline's not new.

I suspect the pressure to wean at four months (or earlier) has been engineered by baby food manufacturers. I know when my grandparents and their peers were weaning their children, it was common to leave them to 8 or 9 months or even a year.

moondog · 19/10/2005 22:18

That's interesting hp.
I never thought to ask my g/parents when they weaned.
Dear God,the thought of pushing food into a six week old makes me feel really upset.

I am absolutely certain that I would have won a Nobel prize in Science by now If I hadn't been given baby rice in a bottle when I was 3 weeks old (and fed home-made formula, and fed 3 meals/day by 6 weeks, etc.).

And you can't prove any different, neener neener...

nooka · 19/10/2005 23:27

I'm with lockets, my mother can't even remember what day I was born on (youngest of four). But to be honest I wonder how much of these accounts are that accurate? My dh and I can't agree on when ds started walking and that was only five or so years ago. I think that I started baby rice with both ds and dd at between 4 and 6 mths, but I certainly couldn't state the week. I know some people keep records of everything, but I am thinking of my family's penchant to exagerate, to me those first few moths are such a blur that one week could very easily flow into the next (and the next and the next).

ghosty · 19/10/2005 23:41

I was given solids at 6 weeks apparently
Farex (baby rice?)
Then by 4 months I was on all sorts of food (seasoned with MARMITE )

I have no allergies and was a healthy, sporty teenager and am a fit and healthy adult.

My mother still mutters "I don't know how you and your sister can give your babies such bland food ... put some salt in it for god's sake!"

Trickorflum · 19/10/2005 23:41

YES, I AM DEAD

hunkerpumpkin · 19/10/2005 23:46

Don't you find that a bit annoying, Flum?

bobbybob · 20/10/2005 00:38

Yes it did, I have constant problems with my stomach and bowels even now. They are vague, annoying and change all the time.

I had one weird rash after another when I was a kid. I was in hospital time and time again when I was a baby.

So yes I was harmed, and more scarily I think that that "harm" was passed to ds who is worse than I ever was despite exclusive breastfeeding and introduction of solids at 6 months. I don't think that he is an example of why breastfeeding doesn't work - I think he is an example of a scary phenomenon of passing on your own allergic tendencies to your child.

My dad was bottle fed and has a myriad of health problems now. My mum was breastfed for 9 months and even though she is obese (sorry mum if you are lurking, but you are) and eats crap she has avoided type 2 diabetes. She is a medical miracle.

Trickorflum · 20/10/2005 23:26

Not really, I don't know any different
