Teething and weaning?

DS is 7 months and rally only just getting going on food but since the weekend he has regressed and really doesn't want to eat. He is slowly teething, has a tiny white lump on gum as this first tooth pushes through. Also has a cold.

It's normal that it puts them off food isn't it? I can't remember from the first time round but it makes sense.

Anything I can do except grin and bear the extra BF sessions.........

I think it does put them off food, but it's great for toast eating when they've got that first tooth.I think having a cold puts them off even more as they can't taste so much and they get over colds very quickly. Is your LO sleeping any better fifi?

fifitot · 21/02/2011 13:53

Oh Hi Loo! Not really sleeping much better tbh. This cold/teething has thrown things off a bit. In own room now so I leave him to cry for a bit after he does down and he sometimes settles. Still wants a feed at 10, 2 and anytime from 5.......However now also wants one at 12!

HV says he needs to be eating more solids (which I know) and told me not to feed him in the night to encourage him. Great idea but pretty unworkable especially when he cried for nearly 4 hours on and off the other night!

Beginning to think he will only do it when he is ready - which isn't now!

Teething does put them off food. As long as he is getting plenty of fluids he will be fine. Try giving him some chilled carrot or cucumber sticks, really soothing for sore little gums and a few vitamins in there too.

Try not to worry about the sleeping. All 3 of mine have just done it in their own time and they were all sleeping through within nine months. Its so annoying when you think you've got is sussed and then teething or a cold messes it up.

Thanks!

fifi your HV advice seems pretty daft to me: everyone knows that if you stopped feeding in the night he'd eat more in the day, but that doesn't mean that not feeding him at night is the answer. IMHO it works the other way, the more you get down them in the day the less they feed at night and suddenly everything starts to be better all at once but you have to wait for it to happen. I'm still waiting for dc3 to eat properly and things are getting slowly better (last night fed 7pm, rocked back to sleep at 10pm, fed at 1am then at 6.40am which is pretty good). Hope he gets over his cold soon.

I'd also ignore the HV - milk is the primary source of nutrition and calories, and if DS is wanting to feed still at night, go with it.

I'm only saying this as my DS is the same age and he's had raging teething, and went right off his food, though he really loved cold yogurt with fruit puree, and lots of rice cakes and sugar free rusks!

DS also wakes at the very least twice a night (and I generally feed him twice a night), often three for a cuddle.

It's hard when it all gets knocked around like this, but it does all seem to work itself out - I always remind myself that a rough patch is normally a sign of a better one around the corner!

Still won't eat. Only had a couple of spoonfuls of banana porridge since Friday! Of course he is BFing.

I just wish he would 'get' food. Won't eat off spoon, won't BLW - well messes but won't eat.

Eats a little bit at nursery but only because I am not there I guess.

I know this is hard and will work out eventually but getting through it is driving me mad. Especially since I am now back at work and knackered due to night feeds!

Thanks for all replies.

My DS (7mo) is in a similar position, top incisors coming through now and he's incredibly grizzly and has a raging cold. Eating much less in terms of solids and only seems to want the sweet purees. He's also BF more now including throughout the night. And his sleep in the night is broken by regular waking and crying out. Oh the joys. I've heard each teething bout usually lasts about 2 weeks and we are a week in so far so counting the days...!

Picklesenthusiasticmummy · 17/05/2011 22:29

Hello I'm new to this, but reading all your tales is strangely reassuring. My DD is 7 months and has two bottom teeth, which took about a week each to come through recently, so I thought there would be some respite, but she has yet another cold, been going on 3-4 weeks now and although last 2 weeks she ate better than ever before (I am doing a combination of purees and BLW which she seemed to like), these last few days she doesn't seem to want much at all, finger food or puree including stuff she had devoured previously. Several people including my mum have said they tend to have a runny nose & cold symptoms when they are teething, but I have no idea why, what the relation is! But like some of you cold fruit puree and yoghurt has never been declined but everything else has, my DH and I now slightly concerned she has developed a sweet tooth which I really wanted to avoid!
Just hoping she cheers up with mealtimes again soon, felt very defeated today!

theborrower · 18/05/2011 21:28

Yeah, I think so. DD is 9 months and has had her first two teeth come in over the last few weeks. She's also had a bit of a cold (or is that caused by teething?) but she went completely off her food for a good few days (she's normally very good) and would only eat a wee bit of fruit, if that. She drank extra milk instead, and she has her appetite back now too. She had also been quite unsettled at night (waking, just wanting cuddles) but that also seems to have settled back again. Until the next tooth, that is...! :)
