DD is way too young to wean yet but i would like to read up and be prepared. Will probably follow a mixture of blw and Annabel karmel

Can someone suggest a blw book please?

Gill Rapley is the Goddess of blw so her book is probably best. To be honest, I blw both of my kids and never used a book - just fed them. Avoid salt, nuts, honey and too much sugar and start off with raw / steamed fruit and veg that they can hold - take it from there.

Have fun!

Here's the BLW book:

www.amazon.co.uk/Baby-led-Weaning-Helping-Your-Baby/dp/0091923808/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1298194204&sr=1-1

It's great that you want to read up now - reading this book in advance would be a good step because it explains that you can't really do a mixture of BLW and purees. Sorry. BLW isn't just finger food, it's really more of an approach, where you just let the baby feed themself.

You could do finger food plus purees, or you could do BLW with some loaded spoons (all explained in the book), but the whole point of BLW is that you don't pay attention to all this one teaspoon of this, two teaspoons of that, introduce vegetables in this order, etc etc, which is what AK is all about I think.

Anyway, sorry if I sound like a purist, I have certainly given my DD the odd spoonful of whatever now and again, but just wanted to make the point because often people think giving their baby some toast to hold to stop them grabbing the spoon while they feed them puree is BLW - it isn't.

Weaning is fun however you choose to do it though, so good luck and enjoy yourself!

I'd agree with RJ about either BLW or finger food plus puree. BLW is self-feeding, letting the baby regulate their intake and learn about food, texture etc. I didn't read AK, so can't really compare, but BLW is huge amounts of fun (if you're prepared for the gag reflex...and the mess!).

But we did introduce pre-loaded spoons from pretty much day one of BLW (at a week before 6 months) for Greek yogurt, thick soup, mashed up sweet potato etc - we handed the spoon to DS or left it in front of him and he fed himself. We just use regular tea spoons. Now, at 11 months, he's getting to grips with loading the spoon himself from the bowl.

The Gill Rapley book is great. I got it from the library and loved it. I've also now bought the BLW Cookbook, as I wanted to increase my repertoire of quick meals/get some ideas for when I head to work and we have to provide DS's lunch and snacks for nursery. It's good and has the same info (in more condensed form) as the original book.

Thank you all for your replies. I honestly thought it was pretty much finger foods Blush as I had never heard of it before MN.

I've just ordered the GR cook book from Amazon and if I like the sound of it from the info I'll order the longer book too.

I haven't read the cook book, is it pretty much just a 'normal' recipie book? I thought the whole idea was just to let DS eat whatever we have? So how does a cook book fit into that?

FlipFantasia · 21/02/2011 20:56

titty I think possibly it's aimed mostly at people who don't cook a lot, or who usually eat quite a lot of takeaway or processed ready meals that aren't suitable for babies. I'm a bit of a sucker for cookbooks so maybe it's aimed at people like me know love buying cookbooks Grin

It's like a normal cookbook, the intro bit is quite long and covers pretty much everything the main book does. The recipes are designed for babies to handle and obviously you don't have to worry about things like salt and sugar.

Beijing good luck with the BLW! I've really enjoyed it, DS is a joy to eat with (he will really try anything) and we're eating much more healthily as a family as a result of keeping an eye on things like salt.

Aha, thanks FF, I thought I was missing something there. I can't wait to start and DS is only 16 weeks! I'm so excited about it, I hope he enjoys it too. :)
