Gagging

I have just started weaning my 6 month DD. I have been offering her veg and fruit mashed with a fork, which she is (usually) taking a little of. However, if there is the slightest 'bigger bit' she really gags a lot. The bits really are very small. Is there anything I can do about this, as it worries me, or do most babies do this for a while? Thanks for any advice.

It's normal and a good thing. It looks much worse than it is. She's just learning to move the bigger lumps back to the front of her mouth for chewing.

My 6 month old does the same, I think a lot of it is learning how big a bit they can swallow. He attacks bananas with such excitement that he gags on every second bite Grin

Totally normal, DS did the same for the first few weeks. Gagging is ok and they learn pretty quickly how to move food around their mouths.

Thank you all so much. This has really eased my mind.

Try also letting her have some finger food to play with - I think it comes as less of a surprise to a baby if they put a lump in their mouth themselves rather than off a spoon, when they might be a bit surprised to find it there, if they had been expecting something smoother IYSWIM
