Any advice on weaning so far....

Hi

I started weaning my DS at 24 weeks. This is how we have done it so far..

First 2 weeks - normal 30-35 oz of formula milk. Plain baby rice for breakfast. Which he loves!

This week - baby rice or fruity porridge for breakfast and then pureed sweet potato and carrot for tea - 28 oz of formuka milk.

DS is 27 weeks on Sunday, any advice on when to introduce lunch and if 28 oz milk is too much??

Can anyone show me an example of their feeing plan for 6 month old?

Thanks, any advice would be appriciated! :)

Mine is breastfed so I don't know how much milk he takes, but he dropped on day time feed himself after a couple of weeks of weaning and has stayed steady since.

I started giving him some bits and pieces at lunch time at around 22 weeks, and he was eating 3 times a day within 2 or 3 weeks I think.

He's now 28 weeks I think and today went
6.30am milk feed
8am weetabix
9.30am milk feed
12pm some scrambled eggs, baked beans and toast (shared my lunch) followed by milk
3pm milk feed
5pm mashed sweet potato, yoghurt and a banana
6.30pm milk feed

Dropped one day time feed, not on.

I started weaning at 4 months as that's what's recommended here. DS is now 1 week off 6 months and has;

Breakfast (7.30) 210ml milk plus spoon of baby rice with pureed veg

Lunch (11.30/12) - 210ml milk plus mashed veg and some mashed up chicken

3pm - 150ml milk

Supper (6pm) 180ml milk plus mashed veg and chicken, followed by fruit if he finishes the veg.

10pm 180ml milk.

For veg he has everything really and I am just introducing protein now that he is turning 6 months. He'll also go onto porridge instead of baby rice I think.

Thanks for replies.. Do you know what are the best meats to start off with and how long we have to puree the food. So worried about choking!

You don't really need to puree at all at 6 months - I'd move onto lumpy/mashed food as soon as possible, and introduce finger foods. You can introduce any meats you want really, just avoid anything salty or processed.

Ozziegirly · 18/02/2011 09:29

Yeah, I pureed at first, then got bored and now mash. DS seems to work any large lump out ok and although he has gagged a few times it seems to be ok.

I've only given chicken so far but I reckon everything is fine apart from, as MoonUnit says, anything processed.

My DS is 26 weeks and his schedule looked like this yesterday.

7:00 7 oz milk
9:00 half slice of toast followed by ready brek with apple purée
12:00 sachet plum baby veg followed by sachet ellas kitchen fruit for pudding
2:00 7 oz milk
4:30 3 x 30 ml pots of puréed and mashed veg
7:00 7 oz milk

He eats an awful lot - but is a big boy (20 lb). I haven't introduced chicken / fish yet but am planning on it in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks all,

Tried him with some mashed veg, brocolli with sweet pot & carrot tonight. He gagged a few times - I panicked a bit! and he cried after 3 spoonfulls.. so I mashed some bannana up and he ate it all and loved it! He can obviously can deal with the lumps but isn't too keen on the brocolli!!

I am going to introduce 3rd solid meal tomorrow.. going to try..

Breakfast - Fruit porridge
Lunch - Half a rusk & mashed bannana
Dinner- Baby veg rice & mashed sweet pot

Normal milk feeds inbetween.. going to let him lead on this I think...

What is everyones thoughts on rusks.. would you use as a treat or can you mash for a meal on regular basis?

Also, what about jars??

OP posts:
MoonUnitAlpha · 18/02/2011 21:23

Rusks are sugary biscuits basically - fine as a treat but I wouldn't offer every day.

I think jars are ok occasionally, just like you'd have a ready meal occasionally. They are all very bland and watery though and my ds isn't keen - he prefers the stronger flavours from "real" food.

Try not to panic him when he gags - it's important for them to learn how to deal with lumps, and if you flap around and scare him he could choke. I try to count silently to 10 before intervening, and ds has always managed to cough up whatever he's gagging on by then.

Ozziegirly · 18/02/2011 21:48

Agree with MoonUnit - they look to us as to whether to panic or not and if I just calmly say "oh, you've got a little lump there" he seems fine.

I haven't tried jars only really because they are quite expensive and I basically just cook a bit extra of whatever we have and he has that.

I found DS got rather bunged up after banana which is a shame as he really liked it. He's hit and miss with drinking water so that probably doesn't help. Plus it was over 30 degrees here that week so he was probably a bit dehydrated.

lisababyb · 18/02/2011 22:05

I will try not to panic next time! My DH is just as bad so will have to tell him to try too. :)

Would you suggest offering water with each meal?

OP posts:
MoonUnitAlpha · 18/02/2011 22:20

Yeah, I do - just tap water in a sippy cup.

Ozziegirly · 20/02/2011 03:50

I offer water and DS turns his nose up at it. I just keep trying basically.

Weirdly he loves "drinking" from a glass (I obviously hold it) and I think some trickles in that way.

It is dreadfully messy though.

Zimm · 20/02/2011 20:06

Hmm I am very unstructured, we are two weeks into weaning so DD now 28 weeks.

7am - milk
8.30am - breakfast - fruit pure- today it was mashed banana
9.30 - milk
12.00 - milk
2.30 milk
4.30 milk
5.00 - dinner, usually veggie puree or a porridge type thing. Also finger foods such as rice cakes.
5.30 milk
7.30 milk
12.00am milk :-(
4.00am milk

So as you can see she is 95% milk powered! I am not doing BLW in that I do give mush but I let her feed herself as much as possible with loaded spoon and I never try and get her to eat more then she wants so tend to 'give up' very quickly at each meal. I just introduced water today in the lovely cow cup thing and she took it well :-) TBH some days we skip a meal if she's cranky - I am very laid back as firmly in teh camp that milk is key for now and I am not looking for her to drop any feeds expect the night ones!!! She is EBF so no diea how much milk she is taking.
