Egg allergy. Maybe, maybe not???

DS is now 9 months and is BLW.

When he was 7 months, he on two occasions had a bit of my chicken mayo pannini when we were eating lunch out. Both times he got a bright red uticarial rash under his chin. The Mayo was the only recurring factor on both occasionas as everything else he ate on those days, he has had at other times with no reaction.

I thought it was maybe an egg allergy, but the doctor said just avaiod till he's older an wouldn't test for it.

However, I'm not so sure he does have an egg allergy. He did have a bit of extra light mayo from a home made baked potato and he has also had shop bought syrup pancakes with no reaction. I have since let him try a home made pancake and a home made muffin that had egg in it and no reaction.

Has anyone had simmilar expereinces? Is there maybe some additive in the mayo the shop used that isnt in light mayo?

The same thing has also happened with tomato. He was eating something with tomato puree with no reaction, but then had a slight reaction to a cherry tomoto, but has been given raw tomoto on other occasions with no reaction.

My niece has an egg allergy and her reaction is much more severe. Swollen face, eyes, lips etc.

I would like to start giving him egg, but am a bit concerned too. Any thought or advice?

HI there, my DS is almost 1 and I tried him with scrambled egg around 7 months. He took the rash immediately and spat the egg back up. This made me think he was allergic. I cut out any jars or other foods that contained egg.
I fed him a piece of homemade chicken in breadcrumbs (that had been dipped in egg) and (totally forgetting about the egg thing) gave him it. He ate it, but in the meanwhile his chin and mouth area came up in the red rash again.
Fast forward to now, he has just been tested for egg allergy and he has tested positive.
To be honest I've had to wait for him to be tested, my Dr said nothing about his age, but did tell me to avoid anything with egg, egg albumen etc
The test was to get small amounts of liquid onto his arm, one containing egg, one with histamine and one with something else. The paedatrician left us for half an hour, then came back to check. A little red spot appeared on the histamine and the egg liquids.
I've been told to carry piriton around in the event of him ingesting anything with egg again - but also been advised that it is unlikely that it will produce an anaphylaxis reaction. I've to go back in 6 months and get him tested again.
HTH

Meant to say that the paediatrician advised that he may grow out of it, and that he will be able to eat things that are cooked with egg in them, ie cakes pancakes etc

Was the mayo homemade? i.e. had raw egg in it?

Hello!!

You might get more answers on the allergy board.

Has your GP said no to a referral for testing.

If he's ok with stuff with egg cooked in I would just carry on giving it to him. If you think there have been no recent reactions then you could try a food challenge at home.

The way they do food challenges in hospital is to rub a bit on the back of their neck, then on their cheek, then on their lips waiting 15 mins in between. Then give a tiny amount to eat and give progressively bigger bits waiting 15 mins in between.

You could always do it in the car park of a hospital if really worried about it, or somewhere else with an epipen handy IYSWIM!!

trixymalixy · 18/02/2011 15:27

Oh and try with really well cooked scrambled egg.

Sassles · 18/02/2011 18:57

tittybojangles I asked the place what kind of mayo it was, but the said they get their chicken mayo bought in already made up, so they weren;t sure. Pretty sure it wasn't real mayo INKWIM with raw egg as imagine it is too expensive for the local pool cafe. It would be full fat though.

trixymalixy You sound familliar Grin. I like the food challenge idea. Would you do it with raw egg, trying white and yolk rubbed in (although obviously not raw in his mouth and lips)?

There's no point doing it with raw egg as he's unlikely to be eating it raw. Just do it with scrambled egg.

also wrt the tomato, tomatoes contain histamine, some types more than others, which can mimic an allergic reaction, so not a true allergic reaction.

Just to say my 14 month old has egg allergy - gave her egg when weaning and first 2 times (once small bit of omlette and once lots of hard boliled egg) were fine, and then after than reacted to omlette - rad rash round mouth and eczema got worse. We thought it may be eggallergy, but tried egg again (small amount of scrambled I think it was - DH did it) and was Ok, so we thought must have been soemthing else, but then the next time we tried - reacted again in same way.

So we took her to GP and luckily she referred us to hospital for skin prick test - took a few months but just avoided egg in between. She had the test in December and showed a definite allergy, so we are to avoid egg completely for a year then they will test again to see if she has grown out of it.

The hospital doc did say that reaction can depend on how much egg is in something and and how well cooked, so may be why there were varying reactions -e.g. she said sometimes egg in something like cake where well cooked and smaller proportion may not get a reaction.

I'd push for a test, as you don;t watn to be avoiding something as common as egg is no need, and like us you need to be prescribed antihistamine or something if there is an allegy, in case the reaction gets worse - they may be able to test for tomato at same time, as our hospital letter said 'if you think your child may be allergic to any fruit, please brign the fruit with you' - I'm guessing they store some egg extract but not every fruit under the sun!

Sassles · 25/02/2011 12:32

Thanks catl it sounds like my DS is quite similar to your LO's allergy.

I would rather not be avoiding egg unnessecarily, so will see what the doc can do. I'll maybe try the home test first with some piriton on hand!
