6 months and 1 week old, tongue-thrust reflex still too strong

I started weaning DD last week at 6 months, but we didn't get off to the greatest start, as she caught a vomiting bug, and the recommendation by the nurse was to delay solids for a few days.

Anyway, we're starting up again, but her tongue-thrust reflex is still too strong to really allow any food in, let alone move it to the back of her mouth to swallow. It's the same regardless of finger foods or spoon-fed.

She pushes it all out with her tongue or blows raspberries!

I would've thought it would disappear by this age. I guess all I can do is persevere, right? Or is it something to be worried about? She is otherwise showing all the signs - reaches and grabs for everything and t goes straight to her mouth, and has been sitting up unaided for a good couple of weeks now.

DD didn't lose her tongue thrust reflex until 28 weeks. We did blw. Just let her get on with it and she picked it up straight away once the reflex was gone.

She's 3.9 now and has never had any problems with food.

you can give her soft boiled vegetables like carrots, broccoli to suck on for a start. maybe that suits her better than puree. don't worry too much, she will eventually start to eat :)

Bear in mind that if 'around 26 weeks' is the norm, then some will be later.

As mentioned, it's the same with finger foods - I tried her with those first - cucumber, capsicum strips, asparagus spears, she holds them to her mouth, but her tongue pushes everything out. That's when I thought I'd try spoon feeding in case it made a difference, but it didn't.

Thanks SOH - good to know that it might not necessarily have disappeared by this age. Will jut keep at it!
