ok, roo is 8.5 months & i can barely get him to eat anything. the occasional avocado - whole one! - but not much else really.
he's fully bf & loves his milk, didn't start solids til 6 mths. HV reckons he's ok, he's also a v big boy, but it's still winding me up a bit...esp when friends' babes happily down pots of food.
just tell me someone that this is normal(ish), please!

YEP - my dd was still not really eating at this age and it was one of the reasons i stopped breast feeding at 8 months as that was all she wanted. i am not advising you to stop but i was willing to try anything.

there was an improvement in her eating but not much and she was still eating pureed food at 16 months. very slowly in her own time she start eating solids and finger food, she is a very fussy eater and has a tiny and very frustrating appetite and strange tastes.

she does not like baked beans or potatoes like chips, roasted, mashed but loves raw celery, gresh made garlic bread with lots of garlic, pasta with chilli etc...

we always laugh saying she has a supermodels diet.

but he is normal, as long as you are offering him a wide variety of food and he has a fee mouthfuls, and is alert than he is fine.

they get by on so little. i always think my dd should be skinny as a rake but she is not. they eat what they need.

try to give him a cereal that has iron and other vitamins, ready brek is great.

im sure there will be plenty more advice on offer.

x

thanks lovecloud!

sounds a lot like ds, pasta (with a touch of chilli even!) is one of the few things he'll eat.
really don't want to stop bf yet, but it's crossed my mind in frustrated moments.
he hates porridge, so no ready brek, i do worry about the iron thing...

Yep, totally normal. DS didn't eat much till he was closer to 8 or 9 months and I know babies who have been a year and more before they've worked out what food was!

Breastfeed whenever DS wants it and offer him bits of food when you eat. MUCH easier to have a late weaner, IMO - no messing about with pots of food. You'll be able to take out a sandwich and a banana while all those friends' babies are still expecting time-consuming purees

hunkerpumpkin · 14/10/2005 15:30

And breastmilk totally portable and easy to do - don't wish away the days of being able to satisfy his hunger like that for goodness sake!

geogteach · 14/10/2005 15:35

10 months here and then it was finger food, DD never had any puree or babyfood, stressful while it happened but ultimately so much easier. I say relax he will eat when ready.

thanks all.

he's soooo random, ate nothing but boobs all day & then, after grudgingly eating abt 3 spoonfuls of chicken/veg puree (looking disgusted with it too), happily ate a few pasta pieces (NOT baby pasta ) covered with melted cheese. likes to shove them in his mouth whole & then deal with them....so he def knows HOW to eat, just mostly can't be bothered i think!
sigh.

DD was the same. I did a search on here to see what I said about her and when she was nearly 7 months I started a thread about her shuddering when she was offered food!

She too was fully breastfed until 6 months and didn't really get 'into' food until she was about 11 months. Our 'eureka moment' was garlic mushrooms at a Thanksgiving dinner in the US when she was 11 months and she has steadily picked up since then. She's still not a consistent eater but usually wolfs down 1 or 2 meals a day - rarely 3 - at 20 months.

Ds didn't really start on solids until a year, we faffed around before then, but because of his allergies we kept getting it wrong and going back to bmilk only until he was stable again.

Now 2.5 eats a good amount, including veggies and fruit.

Isnt there an issue with depleting iron resources in baby though? I ask because my DS is showing no signs of wanting to stick anything in his mouth apart from his fists and my norks!

Not with breastmilk - the iron in it is v easily digested (because it's designed for the baby to have, I suppose!) - so nork away The iron in formula (follow-on especially) often makes babies constipated - they're not digesting it in the same way they do from bmilk, because it's not in quite the same form, or something.

Babies often used to be weaned much later than they have been in the last couple of decades - my great aunt was amazed DS was having anything other than milk before he was one!

QueenVictoria · 14/10/2005 23:26

Oh thats alright. HV never said that the other day. Just said - "Wait another 2 weeks and then worry". Wasnt especially helpful.

hunkerpumpkin · 14/10/2005 23:40

HV probably didn't know that, QV...

QueenVictoria · 14/10/2005 23:45

I think you're right. I also think she was busy and rushed and didnt want to discuss it esp as DS is a good healthy size at the mo so he's not urgent as such.

Still, im not working now so ive got plenty of time to crack it!
