Hi, I'm interested in starting to give my nearly six-month old DD some food for her to get on with. Started weaning at just over four months due to her reflux, but she has stopped being interested in purees. I have given her some pieces of plum and banana, and she seems much happier with these.

I'm just wondering what other things are ok to give her, obviously fruit and vegetables, but what other things? I'm worried about the salt content of things like bread sticks and Philadelphia, does anyone know how much salt things can contain for it to be ok for a baby to eat?
TIA

I would not give anything containing salt or sugar to a baby until they are at least 1yrs. rice cakes are great and ellas kitchen and organix etc do some fantastic snacks without any naughties.

my 7 mnth old has steamed vegetables, soft fruit (microwaved apples), potatoes, minced beef, pasta, rice, soft chicken, cous cous, quinoa. I sometimes buy the cook at home sauces or make my own - no stock and limited herbs/spices.

when they get to a year they can eat most things but i limit salt and sugar whenever i can.

BLW is fantastic good luck

I've been giving my DS (6.5m) bits of fruit and veg, meatballs, chicken, toast with fruit puree or soft cheese, rice cakes. I've stopped adding salt to food or use low-salt stock, but otherwise he just gets what we are eating.

Breadsticks (the ones without seasalt on them) and Philadelphia are DD's favourite!

Beware the constipating effects of too much banana Wink

The only things I don't give DD are honey, whole nuts, whole grapes or cherry tomatoes (cut into 1/2 or 1/4)

Have you read the Gill Rapley BLW book? It's very helpful, as is this site by Aitch.

Thanks for the replies. Only really started properly today. She had toast soliders with a tiny bit of butter for breakfast, and some pieces of plum. Bit stuck on what to give her for lunch, haven't got much in, I take it eggs are a no-no before six months?

flisspaps thanks for the warning re banana, she hasn't had too much though, bit tricky for her to keep hold of! I'll look into the book recommendation, might see if the library can order it in for me.

I have been doing a bit of research, but it's mainly from six months, so I'm not sure whether to follow the advice I find or not.

forgot to say they don't recommend gluten until 6 months. fish is another good one. i found doing blw mad my diet much healthier!

jandmmum · 11/02/2011 18:28

they don't really reccommend anything other than fruit and veg before 6 months but I did give DD toast (or rather she grabbed it out my hand) at about 24.5 weeks. RE salt there is a lot of hidden salt in many processed foods you just need to check the labels. They should have no more than 1 gram a day.

Thanks, she's 24 weeks on Sunday. Currently mainly sticking to fruit and veg, with a bit of bread. She had some yellow peppers with tomato purée for her dinner this evening. Went shopping this evening for a few bits for her, checking every label for salt! Got some organix snack things, they do carrot sticks and sweetcorn rings. Just counting the days until she's six months really so I can just give her what I eat. I don't really understand why shes totally rejecting purees though, any ideas?

For a long time, I gave DS chopped up fruit/veg/baby snacks/ toast, and didn't worry about it too much as he didn't really eat too much of it, just had bits from my plate etc. When he got to about 10 months and suddenly started really eating whole meals, we just gave him a portion of what we were having, as long as it wasn't high in salt, hugely processed or with honey/whole nuts in it.

PS DS started purees with great enthusiasm and just when I'd filled the freezer, refused them completely and never took anything from a spoon until he could wield it himself!

I found all my DCs wanted to do it themselves and hated me trying to feed them. It is great for their fine motor skills and for their mouth muscles and I found BLW much much easier and as they do it themselves you get to eat your own whilst they get on with their own.

Flisspaps · 14/02/2011 13:39

No idea why she's rejecting puree, but don't forget that there isn't a magic switch that will go off in a fortnight that will suddenly make her 'ready' for anything other than fruit/veg Wink
