Dehydrated 1 year old

Hello,

I've got a 1 year old son who I have just got back from the hospital with as he's had an awful viral infection, cold, tummy bug kind of thing and because he hadn't eaten or drank anything for days, he was admitted to hospital for nasal gastric rehydradtion.

Thankfully, he's much better in himself and we're back home, but I still have the problem of him simply not wanting to drink.

He has always been bad at taking water - only ever really managing 150mls a day. Some days he'll take a sippy cup, other days he won't go near it, it's a constant battle to get fluid inside him, and he's subsequently often constipated.

I am extremely anxious that my son still had diarrhoea and therefore it's vital I replenish his lost fluid, but he just won't drink.

Any advice would be hugely welcomed. I have tried different flavoured juices, different cups / bottles and nothing seems to work, it's like he just never gets thirsty.

I am worried that if this continues, we'll be back in hospital again getting him pumped full of dioralyte.

Thanks for listening.

ice lollies?

Yes, I have tried ice-lollies. I simply don't know what else to attempt. He's had about 6 lots of diarrhea already today and whilst he is chirpy in himself, and happily munching on dried toast and bananas, I am just so worried that his little body is desperate for liquid.

I see from other posts that children around 1 year old can get quite fussy when it comes to not wanting to drink, which I guess is fine when they're still having milk and all the differet solids that contain water, but if he's not able to have that because of his upset tummy, where else do you turn to get water into him?

Can he have fruits? like peaches in juice, pineapple, applesauce/pureed apples or microwave them until they're squishy, maybe stawberries? Also, you might try the fruit and veggie pouches, tell him they're lovely treats if he can manage those.
Yogurt is a good choice, and while not ideal even those milkshakes and things like fruit shoots. Barring that I mixed smoothie in milk to make it more appetising.
Give him LARGE ice cubes that he cannot possibly swallow (make them in small jelly molds) and see if he'll put them in his mouth and suck.
Try soaking bread in juice or jelly (when still liquid) and see if he'll eat that.
Or, you can always put down a bunch of covers and give him a big bowl and mixing spoon of juice or some other yummy liquid and see if he'll 'bake' with you...those spoons always end up in the mouths Wink

Hopefully you'll find something! think creative and outside of the box. What is he always sticking in his mouth? can you somehow get liquids on that?

And if things get really bad a syringe of fluid in the mouth(aimed at the cheek not down the back of the throat) once every half hour or so (cruel but desperate times desperate measures!) He might spit most of it out, but some will get down him trust me.

we had the same thing last week with DS ... only thing that seemed to work was taking him out for a walk and offering the water while we were out and he was distracted. Oh and the A&E waiting room was also enough distraction to get a lot of Dioralyte into him!!

will he eat grapes?
ds had pneumonia at that age and didn't want to drink at all. but he loved grapes.
might not be the best idea with an upset stomach/diarhoea...
