Bib recommendations for BLW?

I'm feeding DD a mixture of foods, some mashed and some finger foods - all gets messy as she generally helps guide the spoon around her face/arms etc. Also when she drinks water it goes everywhere.

I've got some bibs already but need more for out and about - any recommendations, eg long-sleeved waterproof but can be easily put on/taken off? I've got some from Jojomananbebe that claimed to be waterproof (and aren't - though I do love the pattern and they seem to rinse/not stain OK), a bibette (again not waterproof) and tommee tippee fold up one (waterproof BUT with a stupid hole in the neck just to let the water out, doh).

Anything better out there? Or any other long-sleeved bibs that can be rinsed easily/aren't too pricey?

Thanks Smile

I've never found anything waterproof that didn't massively get in the way so will be watching.

I'm currently in the middle of making some bibs from second hand sleepsuits off ebay. Have bought them a bit too big and made apron bit from legs and then arms to be put on back to front IYSWIM. Have not found a bib that actually works and that my very determined child cannot remove so hoping a row of poppers down her back will defeat her!

I use the long sleeved ones from Mothercare - think they were 3 for £8. They are fabric with a waterproof back and work well for DD.

alfonzo · 05/02/2011 20:07

I wasn't keen on fabric bibs as they required washing after every meal! I roll up dd's sleeves, tuck a little bit of kitchen roll in the collar of whatever she is wearing, then use a long plastic bib that has a soft scoop at the bottom to catch dribble/food. Think they are reasonably priced for a pack of 2 in sainsburys. Can be washed in washing up bowl so only need two as rotate them whilst other is drying.

I second the long sleeved waterproof backed ones from Mothercare. No trouble to get on and off and never had any wet getting through them. I don't wash them after every use but sponge the front and cuffs if necessary and keep using each one for around a day. They are very thin so dry between meals (I hang over the aga rail but sure would be OK over a radiator too).

Thanks for all the replies so far - brief reply here as D&V has struck the 3yo Sad. I've always avoided towelling bibs for same reason as alfonzo - DD grabs the spoon so always has very messy hands and after completely forgetting to take bibs out with us yesterday, I know how coated in food she can get! However I'll have another look into them as at least they are cheaper than the Jojo ones I got, which also need washing each time and dry easily. Looks like there's nothing that does everything I want...

I don't bother with bibs half the time, DS finds them more of a distraction and spends most of his time trying to pull them off than eat/playing with food.

Only put them on when DH is around cos he seems to have a thing about them...makes no odds to me, I just strip him down to his vest, I see it as I'm going to either be washing a vest or a bib, might as well get through the meal with the least amount of distraction.

OvertiredAndShowingOff · 06/02/2011 13:41

I'd recommend Asda and Sainsburys ones. They're fabric with a waterproof lining on the body, and they fasten by velcro at the back of the neck. Cheap too, a couple of quid for two I think.

I find plastic bibs are far too stiff and DD prefers to eat them than the food!

If you have an Ikea you can get to. These are brilliant - you get 2 for £3.05:

I second the ikea ones, although we've only just moved on to them at 15 month old - they were huge before that. Beforehand we had similar ones from toys r us - used them for every meal and they washed well / were fairly waterproof etc. Only thing was they were more expensive. Although probably cheaper than JMB at a guess. The ikea ones are perfection - especially teamed with the antilop high chair...

FetchezLaVache · 06/03/2011 22:55

I second the Sainsbury's ones, long sleeves with an elasticated cuff and waterproof backing. They're about £2.75 I think. Since buying them I no longer have to change DS's entire outfit after each meal!

theborrower · 07/03/2011 19:28

I'm seconding Alfonso - after trying full body bibs with elasticated sleeves (which somehow just let food still go down them) we now go for rolled up sleeves, a wad of kitchen towel tucked down her neck, a muslin over her knees and tucked around her in the highchair, AND a roll up Tommee tippee bib. Phew! But the kitchen towel really soaks up mess and water and generally saves her clothes, so this is the most important bit for us.

Flisspaps · 07/03/2011 19:33

Anything other than the sleeved bibs is ripped off with DD.

And the ones that seem to work best for her are from Poundland - strong velcro, good elastic on the sleeves and they wash really well. The ASDA ones we got have crap Velcro on, she ends up with the sleeves on but the bib part draped over her lap.

jandmmum · 07/03/2011 19:45

At home I use a long sleeved bib with a small plastic backed one over the top. The smaller one fits tighter around the neck so there's less chance of anything getting down there. The bigger long sleeve one usually catches the dropped bits, but is generally not that messy and can be used for a few meals with a clean small one iyswim. When out I till up sleeves and use disposable ones that I get from my local cheap shop (Quality save). The disposable ones are actually pretty waterproof and fasten as tight as you want around the neck. Great for little ones but seem to remember got to a point where ds would rip it off at the toddler stage.
