what milk should i give ds with his baby weetabix things? can i give him skimmed milk with them or should it just be baby milk (he is breast fed but i wouldn't be able to express enough for this so it would have to be formula)

sorry if it's a really daft question Blush

If he's over 6 months, he can have whole cows' milk.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 01/02/2011 19:56

Semiskimmed isn't recommended for under 2s. Just use whole milk. Also, did you know that weetabix is high in salt? Have you thought about using Readybrek instead, maybe mixed with some fruit?

BertieBotts · 01/02/2011 20:02

Yes cow's milk is fine, but it should be full fat. If you don't drink whole milk usually and think it might go off, you can freeze it in ice cube trays to start off with until he's having more of it in a week. I just used it for my coffee :)

MoonUnitAlpha · 01/02/2011 20:02

Normal weetabix has salt in it, but baby weetabix doesn't (although it is twice the price!).

I used formula til 6 months then full fat cow's milk.

Seona1973 · 01/02/2011 20:03

weetabix has very little salt especially with a portion you would give to a child i.e. 2 whole biscuits has 1/4g of salt so 1 biscuit has 1/8th of a gram of salt and half a biscuit would only have 1/16th of a gram of salt.

I would use full fat milk if your lo is over 6 months and under 2 years

Ahardmanisgoodtofind · 01/02/2011 20:03

they aren't proper wheetabix, just a similar product i can't remember what they are called, but they are designed for babies and organic.
readybrek sounds like a good idea though, didnt even think of that! thank you

Sorry moon, hadn't realised it was a special baby weetabix.

The price of baby cereals is a little Shock, think that's why we started them on ReadyBrek with milk and pureed fruit.

and great tip about freezing the milk Bertie Smile

I just use normal weetabix to be honest, as the salt content of half a biscuit is pretty minimal. There's probably more in the toast he has.

Shredded wheat are salt free though I think.

Seona1973 · 01/02/2011 20:37

a slice of toast probably has double the salt than 2 normal weetabix (around 0.5g of salt per slice)

ooh great tip about freezing the whole milk in ice cube trays, thanks! i bought a pint of whole milk last week but had to throw most of it away.
