DD has been on solids now for over a month (she is 5.5mts)and I just wondered when anyone would suggest a fromage frais as dessert?

She currently has a variety of fruit purees, just wondered if she might like something different?

Not until after 6 months.

it contains cow's milk.

WigWamBam · 11/10/2005 13:22

You need to watch some of the other stuff it contains as well, lots of the brands aimed at babies have a lot of artificial flavours and colours, I was amazed at some of the junk that they contained.

marne · 11/10/2005 13:35

i gave it to dd from 4 months. Did i do wrong?

colditz · 11/10/2005 14:49

So did I marne, because I didn't know, and he is fine. But the advice is no cows milk at all before 6 months

Laurasmum · 11/10/2005 16:31

I dont think cows milk does any harm, it just isn't recommended for babies under 6 mths because it doesn't give them all the nutrients they need. Is that right or am I making that up?

Petit filous fromage frais is loaded with sugar.

DS eats natural yoghurt and fromage frais plain or with fruit - she won't miss sweet yoghurts if she's not had them

No need to buy the ones aimed at children then either - just big tubs of full-fat stuff.

colditz · 12/10/2005 11:30

Cows milk for under 6 months can trigger allergies if the baby is prone to them, also is too high in sodium and protien.

I don't think the odd fromage frais does any harm though.

Agree about the petit filous, they are full of crap.

Lovecat · 20/10/2005 13:24

Agree with the 6m+ advice. Have to admit I've been horribly middle class n' hand-knitted about this and only give DD fruit puree with organic plain yoghurt or organic plain fromage frais - I read somewhere that organic milk products produce less pleghm (sp?) than normal milk and as DD has a tendency towards chestiness I use them.

Even the organic ready-made baby yogs are full of shite, imho (organic shite, but shite nonetheless...)

Btw, has anyone out there found full fat plain fromage frais anywhere? I know they used to sell it years ago but these days all you can seem to get is the 0% fat version - even though it's got no nasties thickening it, like so many low-fat products seem to have, I'd rather she had full-fat at this stage...

sweetkitty · 20/10/2005 13:28

Our local Asda does not sell any decent baby yoghurts. I used to buy Rachels Organics or Yeo Valley both of which are yoghurt and fruit puree.

Agree with petit filous though it is awful, bought DD some of the new strawberry ones and threw most of them out, they were a bright pink nasty colour and tasted vile. Cannot believe the amount of rubbish there is in childrens yogurts. I have gone back to making my own from organic yoghurt with a bit of mashed fruit.

Why can't someone make a yogurt with JUST fruit added instead of crap?

ooked at them in waitrose yesterday, hoping for something a little more wholesome. but they had POTATO in them
