Weaning for 2 weeks - DS lost interest

Not sure what to do. I've been giving my 5.5 month old DS purees for the past fortnight. Started with root veg and now tried apple. At first he was quite interested and would eat the purees but now he seems to have lost interest.

He pulls a face with every spoonful and resolutely seals his lips after a few spoonfuls. What do I do? Is it because he doesn't like that particular food (even though all sweet root veggies and sweet fruits taste v.similar)? Do I need to force him to eat or just give in? I don't want to force him and put him off food for life but neither do I want to give in this early to any fussiness with food. Not sure what I should be doing?

Should I persevere and just let him eat 2 or 3 spoonfuls a day? But then for how long as I'm meant to be reducing milk soon...

Any advice welcome!

Oh dear! Now he has started spitting out his veg purees as well as fruit and crying when I try to feed him.Does anyone know if this is normal or should I be worrying?

No, don't force him - 2 or 3 spoonfuls is fine, he's not even 6 months! At this point milk is for nutrition and food is just for fun, exploring new tastes and textures.

Have you given him any finger foods? Lots of babies don't like food being put into their mouths. I started off with finger foods from 5 months, and my ds also likes to feed himself with a spoon if I load it up for him.

I'd let him reduce his milk feeds in his own time too, rather than you reducing them for him.

I had a similar thing with DD, except her acceptance of being spoon-fed only stretched to 2 or 3 days of baby rice before she began automatically refusing everything by pushing my hand away or turning her head away, and beginning to cry.

I had a brief moment when I panicked that she would only like bland foods and be surviving on breast milk until she was 18 Grin but then decided to relax a bit and go down the baby led weaning route instead a fortnight later, when she reached 6 months. It has been really successful so far, she tries (and seems to like) everything I have put in front of her, and she is becoming more dextrous at feeding herself finger foods or fistfuls of stuff. It took about a week or just over of her waving food around and staring at it or dropping it before it started to find its way into her mouth, but since then (touch wood) we have not looked back. She still won't accept a spoon from me, but will now at least try to grab it to feed herself (usually very ineptly!) rather than cry or clam up when she sees it. I think some babies prefer to be in charge and do it all for themselves!
