Books on the basics of weaning!

Hello all,

We're nearly at the weaning stage and wondered I anyone had any books they could recommend to me on it. I really feel like I need an idea of when and how to introduce foods, and recipes!!....really want to make food and eating a happy comfortable experience and not stressed and fussy!

I don't really understand baby led weaning. I'm thinking. I'll be doing purees and finger foods (when can you do finger foods?!)

Thanks

Ok. Your health visitor will have given you a booklet listing what you can give and when. Even if you don't want to do it, the website www.babyledweaning.co.uk (or .com, can't remember) has loads of interesting food ideas. I think if you stop adding salt to your cooking babies can pretty much eat whatever you are. That's how we did it anyway and it was easy peasy.

Depending on when you wean you don't really need to puree anything - purees are more suitable for 4 month olds who have to suck liquid from a spoon. I weaned at 5 months and just offered finger foods straight away, as well as mashed stuff and things like yoghurt/porridge from a spoon.

The Baby Led Weaning book is worth reading even if like me you don't go down the strict BLW route. Good ideas about putting food in front of the baby and just letting them get on with it. If you're not starting til nearer 6 months then they can have pretty much anything.

If you wean early then obviously you have to be more careful and puree everything - a book like Annabel Karmel or the Gina Ford weaning book gives you puree recipes and exact instructions on what to give day by day.

I would check out your local library, mine had quite a few different books on weaning, so you can read a few and then if you want to, buy one.

But really, recipes for purees are:
boil item to be pureed
puree it
feed to baby

So you might feel a bit ripped off if you actually pay for these recipes! Smile
