Recomend a weaning book?

I'd really like to buy a book to use to help me wean my daughter in a month or so. "What to Expect When You're Expecting" was my bible during pregnancy and Contented Little Baby really helped me get my daughter into a routine early on, so something along those lines would be great - any suggestions?

Baby-Led Weaning by Gill Rapley.

FunnysInTheGarden · 28/01/2011 21:58

oh, no. Just Puree up whatever seems like you might like to eat. Never did books with DS1 and DS2 lives on Plum baby food since we are too knackered to puree owt.

But seriously. If you eat tomato pasta for example, cook some for her and puree it. Tis simple and no need for books.

FunnysInTheGarden · 28/01/2011 21:59

of course it does depend if you are doing pure BWL or just the usual puree and a bit or toast etc here and there.

MoonUnitAlpha · 28/01/2011 22:02

I enjoyed the BLW book (though haven't followed it strictly), but I don't think it'll be your thing!

Why not try the Gina Ford weaning book? Very similar to the Contented Little Baby, tells you exactly how much of what to give when, down to the exact time.

Chocolateporridge · 28/01/2011 22:03

Erm, don't want to sound thick funnys but what's BWL?!!!

BLW - Baby Led Weaning

Chocolateporridge · 28/01/2011 22:06

Ah hah! Is there only one Baby Led Weaning book then?

Yes I think so - by Gill Rapley. She was the one that did the study that it is based on.

I started weaning at 22 weeks and just gave ds mashed stuff and finger foods. The CLB weaning book gives instructions from 4, 5 and 6 months and is very much "Day 1, two cubes of X at 11am, see page 35 for the recipe". The BLW weaning book is more of the philosophy behind it rather than instructions of what to give.

I swear by the 101 Greatest Baby Purees by Annabel Karmel. Great easy meals, from first tastes to big dinners. Both my DC's loved them :)

FunnysInTheGarden · 28/01/2011 22:20

Chocolate have you never heard of Baby Wed Leaning?

RJandA · 29/01/2011 09:52

Funnys, I don't think most people have heard of baby led weaning.

I'm taking part in an infant nutrition study and the lady who came to interview me has interviewed lots of other families about their child's eating - she hadn't heard of it. My HV only seemed to have a vague idea what it was, and the distinct impression that it's DANGEROUS.

Just give it time...

Lollypolly · 29/01/2011 09:58

BLW - did it 6 years ago when no-one had heard of it (Gill Rapley did a radio interview about her "newfangled" approach) and been recommending it since - discussing it with a group of girlfriends last night actually. Gill Rapley is an icon in our house. Step away from the blender!

Chocolateporridge · 30/01/2011 19:57

Okay, I'm converted, I think I'll go down the BLW path. Might see if the library has the Gill Rapley book so I can look at it first. Thanks so much to all of you for all your tips!

Hi chocolate, I am doing BLW with my LO who's now 7 and 1/2 months old. It's great, messy but fun. You can have my copy of the book if you send me your address.

Chocolateporridge · 02/02/2011 20:55

Oooh - thanks so much mamma1mia, I'll figure out how to send you my address asap :)

Chocolate - Glad you got the BLW book. As people say above it is just about giving your baby what you eat, but I was like "but how do I do that?" "What size do I cut stuff into etc?". Thought this book was fabulous and a very interesting read indeed.

I then struggled a bit with what to cook to make things suitable for all of us and for ideas for lunches etc. The cookbook that Rapley and Murkett has done is really very good too and I feel the book lacks examples of what they are saying and this complements it nicely.

Promise I'm not an agent to Rapley and Murkett!! Just thought the books were actually really helpful.
