BLW-ers - what do you give at breakfast?

Just looking for some inspiration really, as most breakfast type foods require a spoon and at 6 months, that's a big ask! Grin

A lot of fruit is quite slippery, but will obviously be trying that along with toast soldiers.

Any other ideas? DD is 5.5 months old - I have just started to let her have a try at BLW but her Tongue-thrust reflex is not actually letting her take in any food, let alone moving it to the back of her throat to swallow, so I'm going to go with my instinct and wait until 6 months (damn the latest 'findings' for making me question myself Angry she is otherwise EBF).

When I weaned DS I started him on finger foods right away, but didn't do purely BLW and spoon-fed him beeline.

TIA :)

...'and spoon-fed him as well'. Damn auto-correct. Blush

Mine liked mini shredded wheats, Shreddies and Oatibix bites (but the last two do have sugar and salt in, I think)

You could try porridge pancakes (make thick porridge and leave to solidify, then cut up)

Eggy bread is good, or pancakes. Bits of banana dipped in yoghurt is messy but fun! Blueberries are always popular and good for pincer grip once they're a bit bigger

Have a good time!

Ooh, some great ideas - thanks!

Was going to recommend porridge pancakes too. Also soak weetabix in milk both sides just enough to soften it, but not disintigrate, then cut in quarters and they can pick it up (bleurgh though). Toast or big ricecakes good too. I have to admit I often compromised with breakfast and did a bit of spooning, or at least spoon loading.

Take a look at the BLW forum - they have lots of ideas on there, including some recipes like the one for wakey wakey cakies which are good (vrious cereals smushed up with yoghurt and banana and then baked. Freeze really well too)

chocolatemacadamias · 27/01/2011 13:18

We used natural yoghurt to stick some of the cereals together so they were easier to pick up with fingers or on a spoon loaded by mum to begin with - worked well with rice bubbles!

also very well scrambled egg (so it goes into rubbery lumps - gross!) but easy to pick up, or omlette left to cool and cut up into chunks.

I found that leaving the skin on things like melon and pear helped initially as at least DD could pick it up and taste it especially as she wasn't really eating at that stage just tasting.

stick with your instincts, BLW and EBF worked fantastically for us, get comments all the time on DDs eating etc and the best part was that it was easy to do and fun!

chocolatemacadamias · 27/01/2011 13:21

sorry that last bit sounded smug, didn't mean to, its just interesting how impressed people seem to be with BLW and they always imagine its far harder than I found it to be.

KatieMiddleton · 27/01/2011 13:21

Large chunks of banana - big enough for little fingers to grip but not so big they can ram the whole thing in their mouth.

Toast - same thing with sizing you can spread with nut butters, cheese spread, marmite.

French toast - cooled and cut into wedges

Grapes cut in half - maybe when tongue thrust reflex settle down

Apple - cut into chunks are per banana

And even blw-ers spoon yoghurt!

I usually went with something bread based, some fruit and some dairy (usually yoghurt). Breakfast hasn't moved on much and DS is nearly 2 now.

5DollarShake · 27/01/2011 13:29

Thanks so much everyone one! A lot of this is what DS (nearly 2) is on now, so will obviously make mornings a lot easier!

I guess I'm just thinking in the very early days when she's really just learning to pick up and eat, but I know that time will pass v quickly and she'll be able to move onto things which require a bit more dexterity and co-ordination.

Quarter an eating apple and core and put in the microwave for 30 seconds or so, it goes all soft but stays together enough for LO to hold and suck the apple off.

I also spoon feed my DD in the morning as she really is not that interested but will take a few spoons of apple and pear puree (please don't flame me avid BLWs!)

LovingKent · 29/01/2011 19:22

Drop scones
Cheese on toast
Scrambled egg and toast
Porridge (given on a spoon)
Yoghurt (given on a spoon)
Eggy bread
Fruit

I'll second mini shredded wheats. No salt or sugar.
My baby loves them soaked in warm milk.

Petifilou · 30/01/2011 21:36

I do thick porridge with fruit dippers, but actually yesterday for the first time DS just picked the porridge up and licked it off his hands, and seemed happy to do so! He's been doing BLW for about 6 weeks.

Not one for when you're in a rush though!

Mostly he has fruit or toast. Mango (cut up into long chip shapes with skin left on) and plums (quartered with stone removed - he just sucks and sucks and then spits out the skin!) go down particularly well.

Never thought of mini shredded wheats. FANTASTIC idea. Will be nipping out to Tesco in the morning for those!

Fifilottie · 31/01/2011 08:42

marmite on toast cut into mini squares(an absolute favourite..she is a part of the "love it" gang)
grapes cut in half
oat/raisin and apple mini pancakes
My Dd didn't like the mini shredded wheats :( will keep trying them though
