Looks like I will have to do BLW then?!

DS is 6m and granted I have only just started weaning but he hates the spoon! Well he doesn't hate it, he takes it off me and sticks it in his mouth where it stays and he gnaws on it.

I can't get purees down him much or yoghurts tbh. He will eat finger food but tbh didn't really want to go the BLW route fully as keen for him to get enough food down him so that he wakes up for milk less and less! (Please!!!!) Plus he starts nursery soon and will have to be spoon fed there most of the time I think.

Is there a magic trick to getting your child to accept the spoon or I am expecting too much for a 6m old. Should I just give him bits of finger food and hope some of it ends up inside of him rather than in his hair or on the floor!

Put a spoon in each of his hands and one for you. Spoon in his food as he waves the spoons!

fifitot · 18/01/2011 09:22

Ah good idea. I tried one spoon in his hand but he just used his other hand to knock the one I was holding out of my hand! 3 spoons is clearly the way forward!

I'm exactly the same fifi, I didn't want to do BLW, was going to do a bit of finger food and a bit of purees but dc3 will not open her mouth to put the spoon in. We've been trying for 4 weeks now!! She merrily sucks the butter off toast, licks cream cheese off rice cakes and shoves bits of banana in her mouth but spoons get a bemused look and closed mouth. I seriously want to get some proper food down her as she stopped sleeping well in early december and I need more sleep.

DS will only open his mouth for a spoon if he gets to 'help' either by taking to spoon completely or guiding it in by holding my hand. He gives me a look as if to say 'Look Mummy, this is how I roll'

fifitot · 18/01/2011 19:01

Glad not just me then! At least they are getting something I suppose. Just might be a long haul!

this is exactly why we started blw. the downside is the lack of food intake yes, but they have soooo much fun, and that makes it more fun for you! i would much rather watch ds work out what to do with a cheesy omelette and pastry strips (dinner today) than sit there making choo choo trains out of spoons Grin

fifitot · 19/01/2011 09:22

I just don't have the time though! I am due back at work soon unfortunately and the thought of sitting there trying to get breakfast down him with the need to get DD to school and me to work and him to nursery.......

I've not got work to go back to fifi but I can't really embrace the 'fun' of BLW as the other 2 need to get out of the house at 8.05. DC3 hasn't the motor skills to get anything small in her mouth and hasn't any teeth, so not giving her stuff on a spoon just means delaying her food intake which means she'll have to have ff top ups as I need to sleep. If she's still antispoon at 7 months I'm getting the bottles out (she'll probably turn her little baby face politely away).

I think I recognise your name from the sleep threads Loo!

This is pretty much what happened with my DS.

I did BLW and got back to work - we leave at 7:30 every morning. He had toast soldiers to begin with and now he has a pincer grip he has a pot of a mix of dry cereal and dried fruit and the joy is that he can eat it on his own without me having to feed him, so I can get my breakfast, put on washing or make my lunch at the same time.

I should probably admit that I had never thought about BLW before and don't think I would have done it if I hadn't had to. However, I will be doing it again with the next one.

LooL00 · 21/01/2011 13:09

Seem to be making some progress witn the spooning here, after only 5 weeks!! And dc3 is really getting into the finger foods. No better with the sleep though fifi, but no worse either. How's your lo sleeping now?

fifitot · 21/01/2011 19:12

Still pretty rubbish at sleeping. Does 10, wakes at 12 but don't feed him and usually goes off, then 2am feed, then 4am feed. really want him to drop the 4am feed as it is so close to when we have to get up with other child. Maybe going to work on it this weekend.

DS still not liking the spoon! Might just go with the BLW for now.

We're doing about the same with sleeping, 10ish ,2ish 5ish then 7am we get up. I'm convinced she could drop the 5ish but I'm hoping she'll change once she's eating more.I'm doing finger food and mush 2 or 3 times a day.But nothing fancy, just plain yog or baby rice or veg I've cooked anyway and toast, banana pieces or ricecakes with cream cheese. I'm not giving in just yet!!

fifitot · 22/01/2011 10:29

Tried to get him back off without a feed at 4 this morning - he cried for an hour and woke up DD so we all ended up getting up at around 5.30. Ugh.

Maybe I should work on the 2am instead.

As for eating - very little progress here Loo. I am just offering it anyway in the hope he will 'get it' soon.
