Importance of 'single' veg/fruit as first foods

Will be starting to wean DD next month with a mixture of puree and finger foods.

Various things I have read talk about introducing individual veg as the first foods, be it pureed or just steamed for BLW.

What is the importance of single foods? Is there any reason why I couldn't do say a carrot stick as a finger food but a mixed puree?

I think theory behind introducing single foods is down to being able to tell if there is an allergy. But the only people I know who've done that are those that have stuck religiously to a "program" of weaning and have introduced particular foods and meals to a schedule.

The only reason steamed or roasted veg sticks are normally a first food in BLW is that they are simple and easy to handle. We only did plain veg to ease her into it, and once she'd got the hang of things, we quickly moved onto proper meals and she was eating what we were by about 2 weeks in.

Thanks raincloud, think we'll probably take the same approach. It's such a minefield though it's already doing my head in Grin

If there is no history of allergies in the family then the single foods approach is somewhat over cautious IMHO.

I did BLW with both DC, with my first I faffed around steaming carrot sticks etc. before moving on to fmaily food. Second time around I just gave what we were having from the start (excepting 'banned' food stuff, obviously). It was much less stress and hassle.

Thanks Hetty Smile

What raincloud and hetty said.

We didn't do single foods, but because I have some (non-food) allergies I did introduce potentially allergenic foods a few days apart from each other (gluten, dairy, strawberries, peppers, kiwi etc).

Thanks angeldog, something to consider there

When I Weaned dd. I gave her new tastes every day. She's never been fussy with her meals

No history of allergies in my family, but my ds seems to be reacting to something and as I didn't do the single food things I'm not sure what it is Confused

Think it may also help if child refuses or doesn't seem to like a food to offer it again next day as it can take several (well, many) goes for them to begin to appreciate a new taste. Our child is only 4.5 months but at 6 months I intend to just offer her whatever we are eating if it's suitable, so our daughter will get to taste the same foods for a few days running, possibly cooked in different ways, simply 'cos i like to use up fresh veg before it goes off so we tend to eat the same few vegetsbles a few times in a row anyway.
