BLW FAQ

I have some questions and thought it might be useful to start a BLW FAQ.

I was wondering: -

Do I have to cook using full fat milk if DS is eating what we're having?

Do I have to give DS 'baby' porridge and rice, or can I give him normal versions?

Does steak have to be well done for DS?

How did others introduce rice and mashed potato etc? I.E things which aren't sticks...

I had another one but I've forgotten it now...I'll be back later...

Hi Helen

www.babyledweaning.com/ is a pretty useful site, the forum is very friendly and useful too.

FWIW, my answers to your questions would be:

Full fat milk until he's 2, semi skimmed until 5, but if you're just using a bit in cooking then I don't think it really matters.

Normal porridge / rice is fine (and much cheaper!)

I would make sure all meat is cooked through personally.

How to introduce things that aren't sticks... just put them down and see what he does! Stiff mash is pretty easy to pick up, rice quite difficult but mine (10 months) can manage it quite well now. Try sushi rice so it sticks together a bit?

Have to go, LO awake¬!

Good luck
Smile

Thanks RJandA - I have been lurking on BLW.com, but haven't posted...

We use semi skimmed milk in cooking but prob should be full fat!

For meat we just cook it how we like it, never really thought about how well done it should be.

Not tried rice yet, but for mashed potato she just scoops it up and shoves it in her mouth! I think it's good to give them a shot with different things, they figure it out how to feed themselves, even if it's not quite how you imagine it might be! Grin

When I first started, I used to spread cream cheese on toast fingers and leave one end clean imagining that DD would pick the toast up by the clean end like an adult would! Stooopid mummy.

Even now at 10 months, sometimes DD likes to deal with loaded spoons by picking the food off the end with her fingers instead of putting the spoon in her mouth. Lots of fun.
