am running out of ideas in the fish department and would love to hear baby recipes involving seafood that a 9-12month old would enjoy.

is tuna ok or bad because of mercury?

what about scallop or prawn? should shellfish wait until much later?

Fishpie with prawns is fine. Fishcakes with salmon also fine. Tuna is fine, tinned is better I think, could be wrong stand to be corrected! Nought wrong with the odd good quality fish finger. Tuna pasta, mine love smoked salmon Blush but I buy it on offer and freeze it into portions.
Smoked haddock simmered in milk then serve with cheesy mash and veg. Beware salt though.
My kids love kippers, but so do I!
Also tinned sardines on toast with homemade tomato veggie sauce for dipping.

Am I making it up or did I read somewhere that they shouldn't have more than 2 portions of oily fish a week? Think it was in the Gill Rapley book.
Just found it .... girls no more than 2 portions oily fish, boys no more than 4. Fresh tuna is good, but tinned has less of the essential fatty acid Omega 3 because the canning process reduces the level.
Sorry if I'm answering a question you didn't ask, but thought it was relevant.

And avoid shark and marlin - although i doubt it is very common to give these things to a baby!

great recipe for use with any white fish that my ds (3) was weaned on but still loves now as a pasta sauce: fish and spinach in cheese sauce. From AK family meal planner. Basically microwave fish with a little butter, a few black peppercorns and a bayleaf. Drain of excess liquid and remove peppercorns and bayleaf. Cook some frozen spinach according to packet instructions. Make a batch of cheese sauce (butter flour milk and cheese). Put spinach and cheese sauce in with fish and blend to desired consistency. DH also loves this one! If you want quantities let me know and I'll post them at a more reasonable hour!

No swordfish either, poor babies.

DD's (10 months) absolute favourite is just plain salmon, steamed (normally in the microwave, shhhhhhh).

Today for lunch we all had tuna melt, made with canned tuna in spring water (not brine), although I did obsessively calculate how much salt was in her portion and it was quite a lot so I wouldn't give it too often.

Also she likes a Maddur Jaffrey recipe for cod in tomato sauce, 6th recipe down here but obv leave out the salt.

I think fish pie would be absolutely perfect for a baby, all that cream and mashed potato, yum yum. But I'm too lazy to make the sauce Blush.

Think prawns are fine just take care to store and cook them properly as LOs are susceptible to food poisoning, and I probably wouldn't reheat leftovers containing prawns.

Oh, and tinned tuna doesn't count as an oily fish but fresh tuna does.

Now you know everything I know about fish Smile

DD is only 6 months, but enjoyed Thai green fish curry from the BLW recepie book last night.

amyboo · 10/01/2011 16:09

DS (9 months) loves fish pie - I put in haddock, smoked mackrel and prawns (added peas to his too). He also likes salmon - I've made a couple of AK recipes. One really nice one is salmon with carrot, tomatoes and cheddar cheese. I made it with "seriously strong" cheddar and DS loved it!

muslimah28 · 13/01/2011 19:22

how do you make the tuna and cheese pancakes filfilottie

littleomar · 13/01/2011 19:24

mine is two weeks away from his first birthday and i don't think he's ever had fish. is that bad?

RJandA · 15/01/2011 10:09

littleomar there is lots of good stuff in fish www.eatwell.gov.uk/healthydiet/nutritionessentials/fishandshellfish/.

"We should be eating at least two portions of fish a week including one of oily fish." But limit girls (babies, children and adults) to two portions of oily fish per week. Although how you decide how big a portion is for a baby I'm not sure......

Nothing to get mummy guilt over though. Do you have any objection to fish, or just never thought of it?

Mummy2Bookie · 18/01/2011 07:58

Dd ears anything. Especially tuna risotto and tuna fishcakes.

Mummy2Bookie · 18/01/2011 07:59

Lol at ears. Damn iPad spell checker. That should be eats everything.

Fifilottie · 18/01/2011 08:35

Muslimah I make a general pancake batter...flour, egg and milk( or you can use part water) and just make it quite a thick batter so I can make small like drop scones(about a table spoon or les of mixture dropped onto the frying pan) I also use self raising flour so they rise a bit and are quite light and airy..Just add tuna flakes and cheese to the mixture as much as you want. You can also hide pureed veg in them. I like to use sweet potatoe/ carrot etc...

muslimah28 · 18/01/2011 19:17

such a cool idea, thank you! will definitely give that a go. have been reading about drop scones on babyledweaning.com but never got round to looking up the recipe, nor thinkng of how to make them interesting Smile

missmakesstuff · 27/01/2011 20:34

DD loves fish, so reading with interest...but realy confused, why are girls limited to only two portions, but boys 4 per week?

missmakesstuff · 27/01/2011 20:34

Just realised is oldish thread...so won't feel hurt if I don't get an answer!

Tigresswoods · 27/01/2011 20:36

I cut a salmon fillet into bite size pieces yesterday, covered them in flour, bathed them in egg and then rolled them in bread crumbs. Fried on both sides a couple of minutes in a hot oiled frying plan. Cool and serve to baby.

Apparently he loved them... he had them for lunch at the Childminder.
