I'm thinking about buying it for a friend who is interested in blw. Is it a worthwhile purchase or should she just stick to bananas, breadsticks, broccoli etc?

I'd be interested to know to. I've just ordered it from amazon so I hope it's good Smile

TBH I actually cant see the need for specific BLW cookbooks. But that is just my opinion. BLW should be able to work with whatever the family is normally eating. Just put some in front of them as off they go. The aim is to get them eating a range of foods and food that the family normally eats. So if you eat, say, sandwiches for lunch, make them one with hummus and cheese, or even a plain spread. Then if you are eating spag bol for dinner, give them the bolognaise and the only adaptation I would make there is throw some spiral pasta in with the spaghetti as then they can hold it better.

But as I said, that is just my opinion!

You're probably right MintAeroBar but my friend is a nervous first time mum so it might give her some reassurance.

I have the book, it has info about blw in the start, a shorter version if the blw book! While we do give DS a lot of what we eat, the recipe book is good for new ideas, one of DHs current favourites is the mushroom carbonara recipe in the book!

We have the book too. I have made a few recipes from it and found some of the hints helpful. Eg use tuna in oil or water, not brine. Maybe obvious but I hadn't thought of it...

I think it will be a good present.

I like it.. has some tasty meals but apart from it having some blw info like napa said it is just like any other cookbook really. It does give some good info about making your own sauces etc We haven't started weaning yet but I'm practising some of the recipes to see which the rest of the family like. Particularly like the lamb tagine, works well in the slow cooker so very convenient for busy days.

Thanks jandmmunm I hope my friend likes it too.

I like it, just to get ideas for cooking normal meals without salt. It is handy for snack ideas too.

I must lend it to MIL for the first few chapters about BLW ...

I have it, and I'm finding it very useful. There is info about maximum amounts of daily salt for each age group and foods to avoid, which, even if you are going down the hardcore 'they'll have whatever we have' route, is really helpful, IMO. (if DS had what DP had, he'd be starting on cheese sandwiches and egg foo yung at 6 months, which isn't really ideal).

Where I think it is very useful is that it doesn't assume the person reading it knows much about cooking. She includes a section about basic techniques and recipes, and explains terms like sifting, simmering and boiling. Unfortunately, I think that will get a slightly dismissive reaction from those who know a lot about healthy eating and regularly cook meals at home ('does she really need to explain what boiling is?' etc)

But if you think there are new parents out there keen to do their best for their DCs, who may have very few cooking skills, and who would appreciate very clear explanations to get started, then that's all to the good IMO.

There are a lot of recipes, as well, which I find useful as I have zero inspiration myself.

I have it and like it. A lot of the recipes have short ingredient lists, and the meals we've cooked from it have been great. I'm an awful cook with no desire to improve, and I can't be arsed with fancy pants cook books, so this has been really handy. It's a bonus that our baby likes the food too! Grin
