Having BLW wobbles; someone tell me DS is not malnourished please

DS is 10 months old. We started BLW at 10 months, he has always eaten something from his plate and he drinks water from an open cup with his meals. DH is anti-BLW (has never done any background reading, just doesn't think it's the way babies should be weaned) and is constantly finding something wrong with DS and relating it to BLW e.g. DS looks pale = he isn't getting enough iron because he is BLW and won't eat meat; DS is only 16lb 11oz = he is BLW and BF and isn't getting enough to eat. Could either of those things be true and do I need to give him supplements or introduce spoon feeding?

Hello,

Is still gaining weight in line with his centile on the chart? His absolute weight doesn't matter - just his rate of gain.

my vegetarian children never ate meat either and none of them are low on iron!
as he is still breastfed i really don't think you need to worry as that is still his main source of nutrition and there is no reason why he would be lacking in anything.

there is no reason that i can see from your post why you would need to give him any supplements or spoon feed him

He's on a steady curve so that's ok, I think he's doing fine.

I just read this with regards to BLW-

'The official advice is to give your baby well-mashed or pureed food at the beginning of weaning, as well as finger food. The Dept of Health, the European Union and the World Health Organisation all recommend this. '

hi akmd - I totally understand your worries. I felt the same and in the end did both. Offered finger foods that ds could feed himself as well as pureed stuff.

It's worked out well for me as he's turned 1 this week, is 91st centile on the chart (very long though - 99th centile) and is able to feed himself all manner of things and will eat anything. No pureeing whatsoever for the past couple of months and he's eating meat even though he only has 2 teeth!
