hi

at my mums house we eat on the floor, always have done, ever since i was little. we have a dining table but it gets very little use, probably when very special guests come Smile

i had a bumbo for ds but now he's growing out of it. can anyone recommend a good chair i can use that works on the floor? it needs to have a good tray because of the blw. i guess i'm looking for a travel highchair that i just plant on the floor but hoping someone can recommend a good one.

thanks.

The Ikea Antilop is made up of a separate chair and legs - not at home at the moment so can't test whether the chair on its own might be stable enough? That way you'd have both a high and low chair!

browneyesblue · 31/12/2010 00:25

Watching with interest. DS's Bumbo was great, but he can now escape from it, even when the tray is in place...

ChippingIn · 31/12/2010 00:57

How about this there are others on the page as well if you aren't into Pooh.

I think you need something a bit sturdier than the antilop top etc so he can't push himself over backwards.

WinterChillita · 31/12/2010 15:38

We still use this for DD (2) and are planning on getting another for DS (23wks). They're brilliant, we used to clip DD to picnic benches and have fish and chips. Most of the time it sits on a dining chair but it's useful to be able to take it with us.

Habbibu · 02/01/2011 10:02

I may be missing something here, but why can't he just sit on the floor, on a plastic mat or something?

HappyHogmanay · 02/01/2011 10:09

after a certain age sitting on the floor is fine but containment is a good thing with BLW as it can be pretty messy at times.
I can't see the seat of the antilop being steady enough for use without the legs although I am a huge fan of it as a highchair.
I got a booster seat like the ones in the links from TK Maxx for a bargain for DC1. It's been handy for taking to GPs, we've taken it to a couple of weddings and it's handy when friends pop over and we need a spare high chair.

muslimah28 · 03/01/2011 19:50

we used to have ds on the floor but now hes crawling it wouldnt work. HappyHogmanay is right, it doesnt work with blw for long

thanks for all the suggestions.

I use the Antilop without legs in my parent's campervan, just strap it on to the bench seat using the lap belt round the back. Could you work out a similar way of anchoring it to another piece of furniture?

Or you could just cut the legs down a bit? Don't think the poppy-out noodle bits are really essential to hold the legs in place.

Gaffer tape him to an innertube?

littleducks · 03/01/2011 19:54

I used a booster from argos, was fairly cheap, strapped onto the dining chairs when required or put on the floor if we were eating on a chador

For blw you need a tray that totally detaches to be washed not a wipe clean one

GoldenGreen · 03/01/2011 19:56

Have you seen the Silver Cross Doodle? It converts from high chair to play table and chair. In the pics they've taken off the tray and straps in the conversion to the chair but it might be possible to keep them on.

sungirltan · 03/01/2011 20:11

littleducks - really? i exclusively blw dd and we have a wooden highchair at home - you cant take the tray off - never had any issues with cleaning?

littleducks · 03/01/2011 20:48

I didnt use platyes at first and even when i did needed to give it a good scrub and stuff with any spices or bolognaise sauce in wood neeed a real good wash to stop it being stained

Wouldnt surprise me if my kids were just especially messy though Wink

hophophippidtyhop · 03/01/2011 21:07

I used one of these for dd. Am about to dust it off for dd2, it's a good solid chair.

Probably too difficult to get hold of, but at the moment I am living in Japan where about 70% of the baby chairs are designed for floor eating. If you had the money and time to track them down, they have really lovely ones. I think you can order from this site online, maybe?

marthamay those are just so nice! i love the second one, and its affordable for the chair itself- but postage comes up as £55 extra! such a shame as its so nice!

hophop the lima is very nice too, have you used it on the floor? am trying to get hold of bambino direct as they have no stock at the moment. kiddicare also have it but for nearly double the price of bambino direct!

I use a big plastic Jane two piece high chair. Like the wooden ones that separate into a toddler table and chair only funkier.
Just google Jane highchair. The move looks ideal. About 40 pounds.

hophophippidtyhop · 04/01/2011 20:40

Yes, I used it on the floor quite a bit. Just had to watch it as she got older and would push on the floor with her feet, but if you're with them not a problem. Also used to sit her at a low coffee table with it and at the table with us too.

marthamay · 04/01/2011 23:07

What a shame! Yes, it's not cheap is it. I like the look of the Jane 'move'. That looks exactly like the kind of thing people use here in Japan.
Good luck muslimah28.

nappyaddict · 06/01/2011 20:21

Jane Move

muslimah28 · 10/01/2011 14:06

thanks for the link nappyaddict i really liked both the lima and the jane design, and this is such a bargain that ive gone for this one! Smile

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 12/01/2011 13:52

For anyone else that is looking this is even cheaper.

muslimah28 · 12/01/2011 15:39

thats a good one but not so suitable for blw on the floor- i need a tray to go with it for the food. can't wait for the jane move to arrive, i have to wait 10 working days.....

Mothercare do a travel highchair that straps onto a normal dining chair but can also be used on the floor. It also comes with a clip on tray. They do a green plasic one (which i have and would recommend) but they also do a padded one which has a wipe clean cover which is probably better for a smaller child, mine was about 1.5 when I bought it.
