9mth old turning very fussy!

Hi all,
Pretty sure that the answer to this is probably "get over it, it's just a phase" but am going to ask anyway.

My 9mth old DD has recently become really fussy over eating anything apart from yogurt!

She always needs to be distracted with a toy or something in her hand while being fed so I almost feel like I am tricking her into eating! But she opens her mouth wide and takes the food so it's like she's aware but just can't bear to do it unless she's occupied by something else!

Yogurt is the only thing she's guaranteed to eat without distraction. It also seems that she prefers shop-bought food (eg. Plum or Organix) than home-made which I hate as I did want her to be as home-grown as possible! I don't think lumpiness is the issue as she's eaten smooth and lumpy of both shop bought and home-made, and while I think she's happier with smooth, she has managed lumpy stuff in the past with some success!

But even the distraction technique is getting less successful now and today's lunch (home made lamb tagine with cous cous - quite sweet as it had raisins in) went virtually un-eaten.

Do I need to go cold turkey on the distraction? I have tried giving her a spoon to hold or some food, rather than a toy but they tend to have even less success.

Am scared I am raising a fussy eater who will be getting used to playing at meal times - not what I want at all! But is it too early to worry about that?

What happens if you give her finger food and let her feed herself? Some are much more enthusiastic if you let them do it themselves.

Thanks mopsera - have just read an old thread and feel very reassured!

Jojay - she will feed herself rice cakes and similar snacks occasionally, but more likely while we're out and about and she's in the buggy (is that bad?!) but once at the highchair and table she tends not to be interested in anything other than messing around and pushing things off the table!

Think I am going to just chill out about it - she's too little for me to start making her mealtimes a battle ground!

I'd persevere with the finger food. I did BLW with DS2 and he went through a definite stage of flinging food about, but after a week of so he realised it was worth eating after all, and he was away!

Well done on chilling out, as you say, it's definitely not worth turning food into a battle Smile
