Do you give them the same breakfast every day?

Dd is nearly 9 months old. She was ebf until weaning at 6 months. I had intended to follow AK, but quickly became disheartened as dd wouldn't eat any of the meals I'd prepared from the book, and it was becoming a waste of time and money.

So I reluctantly started her on Ella's kitchen pouches, which she generally really likes (to the point where if she sees the food coming out of a pouch, she's happy to open her mouth!). She also has some finger foods (mainly rice cakes so far) and Rachel's 1st yoghurts.

However, my main frustration is with breakfast. AK suggests serving some sort of cereal with fruit. Since her timetable suggests serving something different each day, that's what I've been doing. However, this results in dd more often than not rejecting what I offer. I've given various combinations of Plum super porridge, ready brek, organix banana porridge, normal porridge, with apple/pear/mango/banana. She will often reject ones she's previously eaten (I know this is common).

So my question is, would she be more likely to eat it if she was being served something more familiar? Personally I enjoy eating the same breakfast every day. Any advice/recommended breakfasts greatly appreciated.

If it's relevant, she now has 3 bf a day, and usually yoghurt or fromage frais after lunch and dinner.

Sorry for long post!

Thank you sleepywombat, I think I'll give that a try. She does seem to like pear best actually.

I know I need to vary the finger food a bit more, she has tried toast, but I get a bit scared if she starts folding it into her mouth! I tried some pieces of mango the other day, but they were just too slippery. Will persevere, I suppose her grip will improve.

DS has porridge every day, sometimes with banana in it or other fruit. He's become a really fussy eater recently (he's nearly 2) despite the BLW we did! But the porridge is one thing he'll eat reliably.

Porridge is so good for you - every time you see a very old person on TV and their asked the secret of their long life there's always porridge in there somewhere! So I figure it's good for him, so why not?!

DS used to love the pouches too.

Fifilottie · 16/12/2010 07:22

Yes, same same porridge everyday. I just change the fruit I mix it with. I tried weetabix but she never took to it.

Mango goes well with porridge, DD loves that!

DS is 9 months and has baby porridge (cow and gate I think) every day but as soon as this pack is finished he will be having ready brek. I always mix a pre frozen cube of pureed fruit with it (have about 3 different flavours so little bit of variation) and then he has one slice of toast with marge and a little bit of marmite on it. If he is still hungry (he's a big chap) then a yogurt or a bit of banana... that's unusual though.

Wow Tigress, your ds has a big appetite!

Thanks for the replies, sounds like porridge is a favourite, so I think we'll try & stick with that.

My daughter is 7 months old and for breakfast she normally has:

Readybrek made with whole milk and some mixed fruit in (ie: blueberries, banana, pear etc)

Sometimes she will have the boxed baby cereal

Sometimes weetabix with pureed fruit in. Her favourite is porridge though

Mine loves them pouches as well!

commanderprimate · 31/12/2010 19:54

Porridge, every day. It's hard enough coming up with enough variations that he'll eat for the other two meals without giving myself a headache first thing in the morning. Different fruit purees though, depending on what's in freezer/fruitbowl. When I'm at work, I'm happy to eat porridge every single morning, so don't see any reason why he shouldn't too!

my 7mo has Cow & Gate porridge every day, quite thick. It's quite yummy, especially the strawberry & banana one! He has 3/4 of one of those little coloured asda pots of dry porridge mixed with a bit of milk then added hot water. He then has some Plum or Ella's Kitchen fruit pouch at about 11 with some milk, lunch at about 1pm, milk about 3/4pm, then dinner when we do about 6.30/7pm. He's usually asleep by 8/8.30pm :)

porridge everyday, with the occasional weetabix variation in summer! we put sugar-free jam in it, or fruit, depending on what is to hand. Too much faff to be making different breakfasts everyday - I think most people eat the same thing, don't they?

We do have pancakes as a treat on Sundays, which she adores (almost 2, BLW as well)

lauzjp · 08/01/2011 10:23

ooh pancakes! yum. Almost that time of the year too. Isn't there a recommended age for egg though?

drivingmisscrazy · 08/01/2011 14:30

too good for just once a year; it's raw egg you need to worry about. DD has been eating eggs with enthusiasm more or less since weaning

really quick easy recipe - one egg per person just multiply up

1 egg
100 ml milk
1 heaped tablespoon plain flour

mix and leave to stand, covered for minimum half an hour (I think they taste better if left overnight, but it's not necessary)

melt butter in pan, then pour excess into batter, mix well. Then cook pancakes. Eat.
