I'm thinking a bit of baby rice at first

then pureed fruit and veg

no salt/sugar/dairy/meat until 6 months

So until 6 months, I'm going to puree the following stuff. Please could you add to it or tell me if there's anything I shouldn't have added:-

Mashed potato (how do I make it runnier? water?)
broccoli, carrots, sweet potato, butternut squash, cauliflower, stewed apples, pears, bananas, mango

Does that sound abou right??

and I KNOW the WHO recommends 6 months

I did mash with baby milk (breast or formula, whichever you use).

beansprout · 27/09/2005 16:05

That all sounds great. The only thing I didn't use at that stage was potato as it isn't particularly nutritous. Good luck!

flamebat · 27/09/2005 16:05

Lol - was good and didn't mention the WHO bit

DD hated my food with a passion until she got onto lumps, so she mainly ate whatever heinz put in a can!

dinosaur · 27/09/2005 16:06

It sounds fine. I would just say that none of my little darlings liked mashed potato, though.

And avocado was very popular, mixed with a bit of baby rice.

beansprout · 27/09/2005 16:07

Avocado is great, very popular in this house! And dead easy to mash!

suzywong · 27/09/2005 16:08

until 6 months, I would stick to just two or three things, say mashed pear, sweet potato and carrots. There is no point in trying to get a variety of foods in to your baby at this very early stage as you konw you baby doesn't actually need the nutrients. So don't stress out, your baby certainly isn't expecting the full a la carte menu.

I didn't bother with baby rice, looks and tastes like wallpaper paste.

Are you sure you don't fancy hanging on til baby is 6 months?
(not having a go, I F'ed up weaning big time with my kids, did it far too early and got fussy eaters as a result)

flamebat · 27/09/2005 16:08

Oooh, that was one thing DD did love... banana and avacado mashed together.

fastasleep · 27/09/2005 16:10

Bananas may as well have been nectar from heaven as far as my DS was concerned, I even naughtily gave him banana and breastmilk milkshakes in a bottle for a bit (he was underweight and hyperactive and they made him sleepy )

You could try swede, pears... anything fleshy!

QueenOfQuotes · 27/09/2005 16:11

DS1 - vegetables, and then - jars

DS2.....veggies for about 2 weeks (weaned at 4 months also knowing WHO guildlines)...then - everything we ate, pureed up

beansprout · 27/09/2005 16:11

I'm with Suzywong, it really is a faff. We tried ds at 6 months but he didn't want to know until he was 7 months. He now eats anything and lots of it (is 11months).

DD adored banana still does, apple and pear were favourites too.

Carrot, swede, butternut squash, sweet potato were also hits, she hated avocado though.

Wasn't long before she wanted to eat everything herself though.

swizzles · 27/09/2005 16:16

She's 13 weeks, I'm not weaning her until at least 16 weeks and will hang on as soon as I can. I just got a nifty little set of spoons so it set me thinking

swizzles · 27/09/2005 16:17

sorry, meant as long as I can

Will get some heinz jars for emergencies, like when I can't be arsed

beansprout · 27/09/2005 16:20

Why do you want to wean her early? (a question meant in the nicest possible way )

tarantula · 27/09/2005 16:20

ooooo dino another Irish baby that didnt like mash on its own I swore to dp it must be the inferior brands of potatoes found over here. In fact dd is only getting into pots now at 20 months and thats the ones out of the garden.
I weaned at about 5 1/2 mnths and she was onto what we ate by 6 1/2 mnths (well the easier stuff anyway like mince n totties

QueenOfQuotes · 27/09/2005 16:20

oh god - don't go down the jars route - we were "forced" (due to living arrangments) to use jars for DS1.....he only had them at dinner time, but we had a hell of a time getting him off them. Would eat anything at lunch and breakfast, but dinnertime wouldn't touch anything of ours for a long time. Thankfully now he's 5 he will eat (literally) anything. Don't think we've found anything he doesn't like yet

DS2 has been on our food from day one, and it's been SOOO much easier. If you buy a small hand blender, then take the veg (or whatever you're feeding them) out of your meal (before adding all the other stuff) then blend it, only takes seconds

flamebat · 27/09/2005 16:24

QoQ - for me DD was refusing anything I had made, and I tried jars out of desperation to see if it was just my food, or that she didn't want anything except baby rice pudding powder (slightly creamier than basic babyrice). She loved them, and ate them so nicely that I gave in. When she went onto fingerfood and lumpy she decided that whatever we were eating was good enough for her and was off the jars.

Now 2 and eats anything in sight.

porridge

Nbg · 27/09/2005 16:54

Veg, veg, more veg and just a bit more veg.

I started meat at 7 months (I think)

Sounds fine what your doing.

gingerbear · 27/09/2005 16:55

porridge and papaya were DD's faves. I mixed in my own fair breast milk. Waited til 6 months though as she preferred a nice soft breast to a spoon and lukewarm mush.

gingerbear · 27/09/2005 16:56

I hated my nips being stained orange after pureed carrot.

LOLcod · 27/09/2005 16:58

oh yes and the biib
