Milk in jar foods

Quick question - in some of the organic veg purees in jars they have skimmed milk added. The jars are for 4mths up, but I thought you shouldn't give cow's milk in cooking until 6mths (ds is 24 wks). I'm sure it's only a minute amount and I am probably being paranoid about nothing but was just wondering if it's ok to give to him? Ta

It still counts as dairy. Has he had dairy yet? If not, only give those sorts of jars if you want to give him dairy.

(Using skimmed milk in jars is a bit odd, it's hardly like babies need to avoid fat!)

Check the other contents as well, i have seen baby food jars for 4 months up with salt and sugar added!

misdee · 25/09/2005 21:23

always check the packs. which is why i tried to buy the baby organix stuff as its all foods and nothing added. i picked up 2 packs of baby rice, one baby organix, one hipp organic range, the ingrediant list on the hipp one was really long, the organix stuff contains rice flakes an a traceof vit b1.

Dont know if its okay or not - i had to totally avoid dairy with my DD until she was 20 months.

Have to say - for labelling purposes and lack of unnecessary ingredients (salt sugar etc) HIPP organic are best. (and im not big on organic but found them to be the best).

Hmmm. NQC, no I haven't given him dairy yet. Just made him basic purees and baby rice so far as he's not quite 6mths. The thing is we are going on holiday next week so I wanted to get him used to a few jars. I bought some from the Boots organic range, eg. carrot & potato, assuming that's all that would be in it, because I wanted it to be similar to what I had already given him. Why do they put extra stuff in there?!!!

Because it's cheap and bulks it up.

aloha · 25/09/2005 21:58

Skimmed milk is an ingredient in infant formula. And that's suitable from birth.

edam · 25/09/2005 21:59

Because it's actually cheaper to pad out processed food with ingredients such as skimmed milk powder.

misdee · 25/09/2005 21:59

tatties get the organix stuff. few pence more but better IMO.

Tatties · 25/09/2005 22:02

God I'm so naive aren't I?! Misdee where can you get the Organix stuff? Don't think I've seen it anywhere.

most supermarkets stock it. its also egg, milk and gluten free IIRC. dd2 used to projectile vomit each meal untill i used the organix stuff. she is sensitive to additives and fillers. the liost of some jars of baby food scared me.
